The Ballard Alliance and the Ballard Public Art Committee are embarking on a large-scale, community-driven mural project that will cover two sides of a two-story building at 1766 NW Market Street in the heart of Ballard. We have selected these five artists to paint murals that will cover the building for the community to enjoy:
• Craig Cundiff
• Victor Melendez
• Josie Rice
These artists will be providing a gift to the neighborhood, and it's our goal to work with community to support their efforts. We are asking for community members' support for donations that will be used to compensate each artist equally.
By covering the currently vacant property with murals, this project will transform the streetscape through art, enhance the pedestrian experience, promote community identity, and brighten the neighborhood with color. We understand that murals can help deter vandalism, as well as rally and inspire a community. The building’s property management company is donating operational supplies for this project and NOVO Painting & Property Services and Annie’s Art & Frame are donating paint. With their generosity, the project’s supplies and equipment will be covered.
The Ballard Alliance and the Ballard Public Art Committee have been working to bring more local art into Ballard in recent years, including the recent Ballard Storefront Mural Project, the wrapping of multiple utility boxes and Western Towboat mural on the AMLI 24 building on Market Street. Learn more about those projects . These two groups will have the fiduciary responsibility of distributing all funds raised among the artists. In a few years, the building will be transformed into a seven-story boutique hotel, but until then we'll have a beautiful work of art.
Special thanks to CenturyLink for their help with this project and supporting our local art community!
