Help Markeis recover & adjust after getting struck by SUV
Donation protected

On June 21st 2024, as I was making my way from my job in Santa Monica, where I have worked for the last 7 years, I was tragically struck by an SUV that illegally merged into the carpool lane on the 405 south freeway. The accident resulted in me being severely injured. Following the accident, I was hospitalized due to being in a coma and had major surgeries. I was later discharged to a rehab facility where I participated in intense occupational and physical therapy. Since the accident, I have not been able to return to work. As I am truly grateful to still be alive, I have faced a huge financial burden. Prior to my injury, I worked in the healthcare field as a nurse. My career included working with patients who needed assistance with activities of daily living. I have always cared for others who were in need or struggling and took pride in doing so. I never imagined I would be in this position today.

After a life-altering accident, I found myself navigating a new reality as a wheelchair user. While the initial shock was more than overwhelming, I am determined to regain as much independence as possible. With the support of my occupational therapist and a team of specialists, I embarked on a journey to transform my home, vehicle, and daily routines. Adaptive devices, such as a long-handled reacher, adaptive utensils, and a buttonhook have allowed me to dress, eat, and complete some household tasks independently. A shower chair and handheld showerhead gave me the freedom to bathe comfortably without assistance. These tools not only helped me regain control over my routines but also restored a sense of dignity.
Returning to the job I love is one of my biggest goals. To achieve this, my vehicle needs to be modified with hand controls. My home also needs significant adjustments to accommodate my wheelchair. A sturdy ramp would replace the front steps, eliminating the barrier that keeps me from easily entering and leaving my home. Grab bars would be installed in the bathroom for added safety, and doorways would be widened to ensure smooth navigation. Funds will also go a long way in helping me with training equipment, such as cycles and standing frames, medications, doctors appointments, and hospital bills. I want to thank you all for your love and support. It means so much to me.
