This journey originally began on March 27, 2016, on Easter Sunday morning. My husband, Mark was on a train to Washington, DC for a landfill conference and was suddenly taken very ill. At the Charlottesville, University Of Virginia train station, Mark was taken to UVA and that started our PICA aneurysm journey in the back of his brain.
Mark had done well over the past 3 years until our August 2019 checkup that showed us his brain aneurysm had doubled in size and was in danger of rupturing. So on 10-29-2019 Mark was to have had this brain Aneurysm clipped going through the back of his skull and that was supposed to be the surgery to finally fix this Aneurysm.
Instead, this Aneurysm could not be clipped as it kept shutting down major blood supply to Mark's brain every time they tried to clip it. So our Dr. used what is called an Aneurysm Wrapping to wrap the aneurysm so scar tissue could form and that would keep the aneurysm intact and stable.
From day one of surgery Mark's body produced a huge inflammatory response that lead to Chemical Meningitis and after 2-3 weeks this progressed into Methocillian Resistant Staff Aureus Meningitis which is deadly ( MRSA). MRSA was also found in urine. Mark has had 5 surgeries for placement of temporary and permanent shunts as his intracranial pressures have been very high and could have led to brain damage. He has been on high powered antibiotics and he has been on the ventilator. As a family we have been with Mark every day since surgery, he has been home to Lynchburg only 5 out of 48 days. Because Mark has been so critically ill and unaware of what was going on, at least 2 of us have stayed with him at the hospital and at the hotel 1 block away from UVA. Mark has been critically ill and at times unresponsive, deathly ill and for all of this time and has spent half of his hospitalizations in Neuro ICU.
Mark is finally turning the corner, he remains slow but progressing daily. He has lost 55 lbs and is very weak and deconditioned. Mark's Neuro status is slow but doctors do not think he has suffered any permanent brain damage. The money that the Go fund me page provides, will help pay for 7 weeks of hotel bills, hospital-related bills and upcoming acute rehab required. We as a family have been approached by many loving and caring people who want to help us on this difficult journey we have been on. We are so grateful for your loving thoughts, prayers, love, and support. We as a family on Mark's behalf would appreciate any help given and we would be forever grateful.
