Mark Hansen's Most Challenging Race of his Life

Mark’s Race Against Cancer

It appears that Mark is coming into his final lap of his Race Against Cancer. We are praying that this will be his Victory Lap!

Mark has currently been in Houston, Texas at the MD Anderson Cancer Research Hospital. He has been pre-qualified, much like a Tech Inspection for all you Race fans, for a Clinical Trial that is to begin sometime in February. He had all the initial testing and they were to have headed home a week ago.

However, there have been unexpected and serious “bumps in the road”. He is now fighting an infection in his colon along with bladder and heart issues. They will not release him from the Hospital until he is stable. Sandi is staying at a motel close by so that she can speak with doctors and monitor his progress. Although there is no cost to them for the Clinical Trial itself, there are associated costs for travel, rental car, lodging and meals. Sandi was hoping to drive him home to Arizona so he would have some time to “rest” before heading back for the Trial itself. We are not sure how all these new complications will affect his viability for the Trial.

This has not been an easy road for Mark and Sandi and there are more costs being incurred than they ever would have projected. They could certainly use some financial aid and even more importantly, we are requesting HUGE PRAYERS as they move forward on this journey.

The most Challenging Race of his Life
Stage 4, Non-small cell, Inoperable Lung Cancer

It will be a year ago this May that Mark was diagnosed with Cancer, the month marking his 63rd Birthday… so not much to celebrate.

Initially, it was thought that he might have a fungus in his lungs, Valley Fever, something common to those who have been in the desert, say racing off-road like he did for most of his life.   This was his Yellow Caution Flag, just as he had begun to start another lap in his life.

After weeks of waiting on test results, biopsy results, and the PET scan, the word was in and our hearts dropped.  CANCER!  The Black "Consultation" Flag had been dropped and everything seemed to come to a screeching halt for the time being.

We were feeling like he would never get to see the checkered flag again at the end of his race but Mark and his wonderful wife, Sandy, are faithful to God and know that His plan is perfect.

Mark is being treated with a once daily Chemotherapy pill which side effects are “minimal”.  He will only be able to be on that drug for one more year so even at the onset of his diagnosis, they had already been looking at alternative, non-medical supplements & treatments which are not covered by Insurance and are very expensive. For this cause, we are reaching out to friends, family and the Off-Road Racing Community for help.
