Embarking on this academic journey has been a deeply personal and transformative experience, closely intertwined with my long-term involvement in the music industry. Since leaving school in 1991, my passion for electronic music has driven my career as a DJ, music producer, business owner, event organiser, and magazine editor. A decade ago, I established an online music school focused on teaching music production, which was soon followed by the creation of a Community Interest Company (CIC). In my role as director, I have been dedicated to teaching disadvantaged children how to create music and pursue their dreams in the music industry.
I began my academic journey during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, a period of significant personal and professional challenges. The sudden loss of almost 40 scheduled gigs left me questioning the purpose of my life. This led me to pursue education, inspired by my passion to support disadvantaged children and adults. I enrolled on a BA (Hons) in Teaching and Education and soon discovered how educational theories could be applied to my work in music teaching to make a tangible difference. My dissertation, which examined how music practitioners could enhance academic outcomes for children, achieved first-class honours. This milestone encouraged me to further my studies. I must thank Doug, Jon, Heather, Kay and Anne for all their knowledge, support and encouragement at this time.
In 2023, I continued with an MA in Education at the University of Leeds, seeking to deepen my understanding of the intersection between music and education. During my studies, I completed two modules on digital education. The first was led by Chrissi, who even invited me to contribute to a section in her book called 101 Creative Ideas. This was a significant opportunity, as was the chance to present with her at several digital conferences, including one on artificial intelligence at the University. I am eternally grateful for her unbridled support and enthusiasm. I also wish to thank my course leader, Syafiq, and the exceptional module tutors, whose support and teaching has been instrumental throughout my journey.
My sincere thanks also go to Bronwen, who not only guided me through my second module but also served as my dissertation supervisor. Her engaging teaching style, love for learning, and shared appreciation for music created an immediate connection, and her mentorship throughout the dissertation process was essential. Without her encouragement and direction, I would not have thought so much about theoretical frameworks, nor would I have discovered the work of Nancy Fraser. Therefore, I extend my thanks to Nancy Fraser, whose insights on social justice have profoundly influenced my understanding of the subject. Her writings have shown me how to articulate many of the values that have guided my life, often without knowing it.
I must also acknowledge the participants of this study who shared their time and insights, contributing significantly to the depth and relevance of this research. My appreciation extends to those around me who continually inspire and encourage me, including all friends and supporters of my music and educational journey. I would like to thank my partner, Bianca, for her unwavering encouragement, and my parents for their ability to provide me with a strong educational foundation in my early years. A special mention goes to my late, great Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, Cody, who was a companion throughout much of this journey. Although he is sadly missed, I am reminded of his presence during every music studio session - often accompanied by gentle nudges to keep his nose away from the cables.
Finally, I welcome Tempo, my new Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever puppy, who joined me at 8 weeks old as I completed my MA in Education. Alongside this academic achievement, Tempo represents a new chapter in my life, one in which I am committed to continuing my studies and making a significant difference to music and education in England.
Now it is time to focus on my PhD. This needs funding. Anything anyone can do to help me over the next 3 years, would be hugely appreciated. I need £100,000 to do this. Help me please!
