June 4th turned out to be a terrible day for our brother Mark Bryant. We are still not sure what exactly happened to cause his fall, but we know that when he fell, he suffered a severe concussion, fractured his skull, had bleeding from the brain, has swelling of the brain and is suffering from vertigo. He now has double pneumonia, a blood clot in his leg and 3 in his lungs. The doctor has said they are not large clots and they should dissolve. Today the doctor said nothing he has cannot be fixed which is promising, however, it will be a lengthy process. He has been transferred to another hospital today.
At this point, he has been hospitalized three times. The doctors have not been able to control his severe pain. Any cocktail of meds they give him either do not work at all, or work only very temporarily. Due to the pain, he has had little sleep and has eaten very little in 2 weeks. Last week when I saw him he had already lost around 30 lbs.
The pain is excruciating. He has pain in his back and neck, as well as his head. The doctor has said he will most likely never be able to work again, and that he is lucky he survived. The doctor is amazed that he can talk or walk at all.
Glory has taken a leave of absence from her job to care for Mark. She has been at his side day and night; ALL day and ALL night. I am amazed she can think or function. The night I stayed with them, she got 3 hours of sleep and that was the most she had had of straight sleep in a week.
He cannot be left alone. The pain is so bad, he cannot even think straight. They do not have adequate health insurance coverage to provide him with what he needs. The medical personnel are already suggesting he be discharged to go home and then commute forty miles away from home to an outpatient rehab center for treatment. This will be a long road to recovery. It's hard to imagine how he would even be able to drive/ride that distance in the pain he is in continually.
It's hard enough to imagine the physical and emotional challenges of Mark's condition and Glory's care giving responsibilities. I cannot begin to imagine the financial devastation they are facing. Hospital/medical bills are already piling up on them while, simultaneously, they are suffering the sudden loss of two incomes. In Texas there is no state disability insurance taken from your paycheck as there is here in California. If you are reading this and can spare anything to reduce the financial burden on our brother and sister-in-law, I know they would be forever grateful and appreciative. Our family will be eternally grateful as well. Whether or not a financial donation is possible for you at this time, please know how much we appreciate your thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Renee (Bryant) Cook & Ellen (Bryant) Edwards
