Mark Anthony Bittner
Donation protected
I'm Karl, Mark's Eldest son.
I'm raising funds to go towards funeral expenses to give Mark the send of he deserves.
Unfortunately, over the last few years Mark suffered from Dementia, a fate also met by his 2 parents.
Although very successful in his life, Mark's finances dwindled to almost nothing at the time of his passing and we are unable to cover the costs of an average funeral. We would very appreciate any donations to go towards his send off. Thank you in advance CTID
Mark Bittner (1948–2025)
Mark Bittner, aged 76, passed away at the Manchester Royal Infirmary following a double heart attack, after bravely battling dementia.
Born in Philadelphia, USA, in 1948, Mark moved to Manchester at a young age, settling in Cheadle Hulme—his mother being from Levenshulme. It was there that he developed a lifelong passion for Manchester City Football Club, a devotion sparked early on and never diminished.
A regular on the terraces of the Kippax during the 1950s, '60s and '70s, Mark was more than a fan—he was a driving force behind City’s supporter culture. He organized coaches to away games, printed and distributed song sheets, and famously penned the beloved chant:
"Joe Mercer came, we played the game..."—still sung with pride by fans today.
Even while working as a teacher in Saudi Arabia, Mark’s commitment never faltered. He often made the 6,000-mile round trip to attend home and away matches, including the 1981 FA Cup Final and its replay.
Later in life, Mark became a successful businessman and hotelier, owning the Wheatsheaf Inn in Onneley, Staffordshire. The pub became a welcoming hub for football fans and players alike, a place where stories, songs, and friendships were shared—many forged with his beloved son Karl.
Mark served as Secretary of Manchester City’s 40s Club and was elected Fan on the Board during the 1990s, a role he took immense pride in. His passion for the club remained steadfast, attending every home game he could until health challenges made it impossible.
Mark is survived by his three sons, Karl, Daniel, and Oliver; his grandson, Oskar; and his brother, Michael.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Manchester City’s 'City in the Community Foundation', supporting causes close to Mark’s heart.
RIP Dad, Grandad xx
