Mark and Carna Spinella were introduced to me by his brother Glenn, a member of our Men’s Bible Study Group. Glenn knew I spent many years in the Financial Services business, including volunteering as a Financial Counselor in 2 Churches, and thought I might be able to help them.
Hearing Mark and Carna’s story was heart breaking. Just as they were retiring from his Contracting business Mark was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer which went into remission, reoccurred and into remission again leaving huge medical bills.
Mark found a job in a wood working shop that fit his skill set. Finally, they had a small pay check coming in and began working on their debt.
A few months later Mark experienced severe chest pain and was rushed to the hospital where they discovered one artery completely blocked and another artery almost blocked. He had a condition that is referred to as the Widowmaker, and was moved immediately to ICU and prepped for Open Heart Surgery.
Thankfully he survived but the Doctor said it would be awhile before he could return to work. More medical bills, no job and debts piling up. Soon they would be in risk of losing their home, so they sold his work truck, other items of value and pawned what they could. They had tried every way possible to borrow money and approached friends for loans and even tried to refinance their home, to no avail. With no job, massive debts they could not even pay utilities and phone service, which are set to be cut off at any moment.
One person described it to me as they are stuck in a sheer-faced, granite-walled hole with no way out! Like so many other people who get in financial difficulty, they try to fix it themselves, when they really need professional help. Based upon the documentation they have given me they have about $80,000 of immediate debt due, not counting their mortgage. Some these debts are one-time issues while others are ongoing expenses like insurance, utilities and normal monthly expenses. However, every day that goes by interest expenses are adding up.
Our initial goal to get them to a place where they can stop the bleeding is $80,000. Then we will need to reassess any remaining issues.
