Marius' Dental Fund

UPDATE- Marius has been able to work on his dental health, traveling to Las Vegas (UNLV) periodically over the last 9 months thanks to the donations he has received during that time. Over the next few months, he is working to complete everything that is still needed and be pain free in the end. He is currently working on a plan with his dentist for the next few months. Once it is finalized, we will post an update. For now, he has an appointment next week to finalize planning and to put on the crown. The amount needed has been updated for now but there may be more updates coming in the near future. Thank you all again for helping Marius complete his goal with his dental health before we move back to South Africa.

Marius started to look for a dentist when he arrived in Reno, Nevada, 2 years ago. He had an exam and was told that he needed 3 fillings, 2 wisdom tooth extractions, and a crown. This was later confirmed by a second dentist. 

So Marius started to look for a way to pay for this dental work. He purchased dental insurance, but soon realized that it was not going to be a cost effective way to go, with dental insurance working very differently than health insurance, especially if you purchase an individual plan and are not a part of a group plan.

So Marius sought a few different dentists in town and got quotes- one was for $15,000! He also sought out a local dental charity, but that turned out to be a dead end for him. 

So after almost 2 years of looking, he finally decided to go with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, School of Dental Medicine. Even though far, (there are no dental schools in Reno), he knew it would be cheaper even with the travel costs, as UNLV provides excellent work for a majorly discounted price. 

The only downside was that UNLV requires multiple visits. He has already completed 3 visits and has 3 more to do where they will complete the work. The next appointment is May 15th. The inconvenience is well worth paying a significant fraction of the cost.
