Marissa is my daughter and this is her story. Back in July she, her fiancé and their 4 yr. old son went on vacation to Ocean City Maryland where she got sunburn on her thighs and shins. At first it was a typical sunburn but got progressively worse over the following weeks. After being treated by the burn center at Lehigh Valley in Allentown several times we didn't see a lot of improvement and the pain was unbearable. Her white blood count was also very low, so she got referred to a hematologist who did a lot more bloodwork. Also, she got sent to a dermatologist who took a sample for a biopsy, and an oncologist who did a bone marrow biopsy. When all the results finally came in she was diagnosed with the cancer multiple myeloma that caused a very rare skin disease called paraneoplastic pemphigus vulgaris that causes skin lesions and her burns not to heal. It is very rare for someone who is only 25 to have this and that's why they did so much testing to be 100%. She is starting chemo treatments once a week for 6 months with a shot of DVRD and are hoping the wounds on her shins will heal once the underlying problem is addressed. She has been in and out of the hospital in the las few weeks from sicknesses associated to the cancer and her immune being compromised. Marissa does have insurance, but we are trying to raise money to pay for her medical bills and copays that aren't covered, transportation, wound care supplies, and being out of work for 6+ months through her treatment and recovery.
