With the permission of Marisa’s family and her great partner-in-crime, Rich Lawhead, this fundraiser is set up to help with Marisa’s long-term rehabilitation.
On May 3, our gifted horse whisperer, professional trainer, incredible friend and overall bad ass, suffered a massive brain injury, multiple facial fractures and spinal fractures during a trail ride with her beloved horse, Chantico. A random spook that Marisa expertly handles everyday proved to be an exception and in an instant – our young, vibrant 37-year-old was suddenly facing almost unsurmountable odds.
The superwoman that she is, Marisa has overcome these odds by surviving two life-threatening brain surgeries, continued brain swelling and bleeds. With that, however, comes a very long recovery. Marisa can now open her eyes but the process to learn to move, speak and return to her vibrant self (both mentally and physically) will be arduous and long.
Marisa is now at a rehabilitation facility where insurance unfortunately measures her recovery by the number of days she can receive care, not her actual progress. In short order, Rich and Marisa’s family will need to plan for the next steps in her long-term recovery.
We all love and admire Marisa and Rich. To that end, so many of us have been on the receiving end of Rich’s care and goodness to all the residents, businesses and students of San Bernardino for almost 30 years. He loved helping all of us, and now it’s our turn to help Rich and lift Marisa up.

PRAY for Marisa, Rich and her family. The miracles of prayer have brought Marisa life, even when all odds were against her. Now prayer will be critical to her rehab so she can regain the basic skills of movement, talking and eventually walking. Prayer is also so important for Marisa’s caregivers as they will guide her in this process.
If you feel you can help financially, please do so. It is foreseen that the financial impact on the family will be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. All funds will be directed to Marisa’s recovery.
