Mario's Path: Jazz & Afro-Caribbean Beats

Hi everyone,

My name is Mario Barragan, and I’m a percussionist from Berkeley High School’s nationally recognized jazz program. For years, I’ve dedicated my life to mastering the vibrant traditions of Afro-Caribbean music—Bomba and Plena from Puerto Rico, Cuban Rumba, and the improvisational spirit of jazz. Now, as I embark on my college journey, I need your help to turn this passion into a lifelong career.

Why This Matters

Music isn’t just notes and rhythms for me—it’s a bridge between cultures, histories, and communities. As a member of the Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble, the Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble of San Francisco under mentor John Calloway, and the SF Jazz High School All Stars under Rebeca Mauleón, I’ve learned how music can unite people. Whether playing congas at Yoshi’s jazz club or collaborating with peers at festivals, I’ve seen firsthand how rhythm tells stories that words cannot.

The Next Chapter

I’ve been accepted to several music programs on both coasts, where I’ll deepen my study of percussion, composition, and the cultural roots of Afro-Latin jazz. But the cost of tuition, housing, instruments, and lessons is daunting. I’m already working tirelessly—playing with local bands, teaching younger students, and saving every dollar—but I can’t do this alone.
