Mario Needs Us: Stand with Him and His Family

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Ava, and I’m one of Mario’s older cousins.

What started as a normal day on June 28th turned into something none of us could’ve imagined. Mario, a healthy, athletic, and happy 14-year-old, woke up feeling off. When he went to take a shower, he suddenly began shaking and was unable to continue. His mother acted quickly and called for an ambulance. He was rushed to Hickman Hospital, but despite hours of testing, doctors couldn’t determine what was wrong — and his condition kept deteriorating.

Around midnight on June 29th, Mario was life-flighted to ProMedica in Toledo and admitted to the ICU. Our families rushed to be by his side. When I arrived, I asked Mario what happened. He looked at me and said, “I thought I was going to die. The numbers kept getting lower and lower… I thought this was it.”

Eventually, doctors diagnosed him with sepsis — a life-threatening response to an infection. In Mario’s case, bacteria from strep had entered his bloodstream, and the massive amount of fluids being administered started flooding his lungs. He also developed pneumonia and had to have a central line placed using a 13-inch needle in his groin.

Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster. Mario was supposed to be moved out of the ICU on July 1st, but his lungs weren’t strong enough. Each time they try to lower his oxygen support, his levels drop. He’s now on an even stronger oxygen flow, and doctors have found signs of increased blood clotting. They’re still trying to locate where the clot might be.

It’s devastating to watch someone so full of life suddenly need help just to stand up. Mario has always been more than just a cousin — he’s like a little brother to all of us. His mother has not left his side for a second.

We’re asking for help with anything you can give. Donations will go directly toward medical expenses, travel, and basic needs during this difficult time. Every bit means the world to us and helps ease the burden on his mom so she can focus on what matters most — Mario’s recovery.

Please keep Mario in your prayers. He’s fighting hard, and we’re staying hopeful. We’ll keep posting updates as we get them.

Thank you for your support,
With love,

Ava and the entire family will keep adding updates.
