Hi, my name is Abbey Bramell and I'm setting up this GoFundMe for my parents Mario & Yesenia Serrano. They are a devoted father and mother, hard workers and incredibly kind people. Throughout their many years of cultivating relationships with people from all walks of life I know that a very strong love fills their community, whether it be through church friends, work friends, or family. It is exactly because of my belief in that community that we decided to make this page. Anyone who has had the privilege of being in my parents home or presence knows how welcome and ‘at home’ you feel from the moment you step through their door or sit down at their dinner table to eat some of my moms delicious food. They remain this way despite going through a very difficult time these past 3 years.

At the end of 2020, my dad was given a terminal cancer diagnosis. What had been found was Renal Cell Carcinoma or (cancer of the kidney) and it had metastasized. In September 2020 his doctors prepared him to start Immunotherapy to try and combat the more aggressive cancer in his body. The immunotherapy treatment was made very clear to us that it was for helping his body fight the cancer to give him a longer and better quality of life but not cure it. This required a heavy treatment of both sit-in immunotherapy for an hour and taking heavy medication at home. Although its been a difficult time for our family, both my mom and dad have continued working through his treatment in order to pay bills and other living costs.

In December of 2022, his doctor talked to him and told him that he would be starting him on more aggressive Immunotherapy treatment in order to try and shrink some of the cancerous tumors in his body. Although undergoing said treatment this whole year on October 30th 2023 my dad had his regular routine check on his cancer with his oncologist and it was determined that despite the aggressive treatment the tumors in his kidney were not slowing down in growth. After being seen by a urologist, it was decided that the best option was for my dads kidney to be removed in order to continue his immunotherapy and try to hopefully have bigger progress in slowing the growth of the cancer and giving his body a better chance of fighting it and living a longer life.

On Wednesday, November 29th my father underwent surgery to remove his kidney. Although it was successful, he is in for a lengthy recovery of at least two months during which he will be unable to work. Since my mother is helping care for my dad she will be unable to work full time as she usually does. During this time they will still need to pay rent, utilities, their car payment, and whatever medical bills their insurance won’t cover. I have seen the stress my parents are under and how much these past few years have taken a toll on them and I’m hoping that this fund will help alleviate their stress and burden as much as possible. I know they are sadly one of many families affected by life’s unexpected turns but I promise your help is going towards very kind and loving people who truly wouldn’t ask unless absolutely necessary.

Hola, mi nombre es Abbey Bramell y estoy haciendo este GoFundMe para mis padres Mario y Yesenia Serrano. Son padres devotos, trabajadores y personas increíblemente amables. A lo largo de sus muchos años cultivando relaciones con personas de todos los pasos de la vida, sé que el amor que llena su comunidad, ya sea a través de amigos de la iglesia, amigos del trabajo o familiares, es fuerte. Es exactamente por mi fe en esa comunidad que decidimos crear esta página. Cualquiera que haya tenido el privilegio de estar en casa o en presencia de mis padres saben lo bienvenido y "en casa" que te sientes desde el momento en que cruzas su puerta o te sientas a la mesa para comer algo de la deliciosa comida de mi madre. Y mis padres continuan siendo así a pesar de haber estar pasando por un momento muy difícil estos últimos 3 años.

A finales del 2020, a mi papá le diagnosticaron un cáncer terminal. Lo que se había encontrado era carcinoma de células renales o (cáncer de riñón) y había hecho metástasis. En Septiembre de 2020 sus médicos lo prepararon para iniciar Inmunoterapia para intentar combatir el cáncer más agresivo de su cuerpo. El tratamiento de inmunoterapia es para ayudar a su cuerpo a combatir el cáncer para darle una mejor y más larga calidad de vida pero no para curarlo. Esto requirió un tratamiento intenso de inmunoterapia sentada durante una hora y una medicación intensa en casa. Aunque ha sido un momento difícil para nuestra familia, tanto mi mamá como mi papá han continuado trabajando durante el tratamiento de mi papá para poder tener ingreso y pagar las utilidades y otros gastos de vida.

En Diciembre de 2022, su médico habló con él y le dijo que le comenzaría un tratamiento de inmunoterapia más agresivo para intentar reducir algunos de los tumores cancerosos de su cuerpo. Aunque se sometió a dicho tratamiento durante todo este año, el 30 de Octubre de 2023, mi papá tuvo su cita rutinaria sobre su cáncer con su oncólogo y se determinó que, a pesar del tratamiento agresivo, los tumores en su riñón no estaban deteniendo su crecimiento. Después de ser visto por un urólogo, se decidió que la mejor opción era extirpar el riñón de mi papá para continuar con su inmunoterapia y tratar de, con suerte, tener mayores avances en detener el crecimiento del cáncer y darle a su cuerpo una mejor oportunidad de combatirlo y vivir una vida más larga.

El Miércoles 29 de Noviembre mi papá fue operado para extirparle el riñón. Aunque fue un éxito, le espera una larga recuperación de al menos dos meses durante los cuales no podrá trabajar. Como mi madre ayuda a cuidar a mi padre, no podrá trabajar a tiempo completo como lo hace habitualmente. Durante este tiempo, todavía tendrán que pagar la renta, las utilidades, el pago del auto y cualquier deuda médica que su seguro no cubra. He visto el estrés que sufren mis padres y cuánto les a pesado esta situacion estos últimos años y espero que este fondo ayude a alivianar su estrés y carga un poco. Sé que lamentablemente, son una de las muchas familias afectadas por los tiempos inesperados de la vida, pero les prometo que su ayuda ira a personas muy amables y cariñosas que realmente no lo pedirían a menos que fuera absolutamente necesario.
