Mariella is our amazing four year old girl who was diagnosed with Epilepsy last year, 2015. This January, her seizures went out of control for no reason and since then nothing the doctors have tried has worked to prevent her seizures. She has been hospitalized now 16 times since then (as of 5.21.16) , and every 6-10 days she is back in the ER. Her seizures are life threatening almost every time, often require oxygen, and always require hospitalization. Right now her epilepsy is considered uncontrolled, and after going through many drugs and tests, the doctors have said she has about a 2% chance of finding a medication that could control them. Her seizures and the medications will most likely cause learning delays and brain damage the longer that they continue. So far her development has not regressed.
We are so thankful for the generosity of our friends and family and strangers who have given to this account so far. I have listed in bold the things your gifts have helped pay for, as well as the needs we still have.
What we've purchased and/or have been gifted:
The funds you gave helped us buy a special needs car seat, and have also helped us pay for her prescription drugs (some of which cost up to $2000 a month just for one). They have helped us pay for parking, and food every time we are in the hospital, and will help pay for many other things. The medical bills have been very high, and these gifts help us so much!
We were able to receive oxygen tanks and an epilepsy monitor for free. We also have now qualified for a special secondary insurance that helps pay what our other insurance does not, and because our insurance denied genetic testing for her, the DMC children's hospital covered her $15K genetic testing. Her Dad (Amos) has also recently gotten a new job with a better insurance which will start next month. We are hoping the new insurance will help her get the tests and treatments she needs that were denied by our other insurance.
Our current needs:
Because we are in the hospital so often, we have had to hire a regular babysitter. Your gifts help us afford this. Our next needs for her will also include the cost of treatment with a form of medical marijuana called CBD oil. This is the doctor's last drug recommendation, but it is not covered at all by insurance, and the costs are very high.
We are starting the process to apply for an epilepsy assistance dog. The process for this will also include raising funds, but it will be done through another process, where funds will be given directly to the dog training organization. So if you'd like to give toward this expense, please let us know, and wait for now. The gifts given to this account will not be able to be used for the assistance dog.
We appreciate your prayers and support for Mariella. She needs a miracle, and the doctors are running out of ideas of how to help her. We would love to see our incredibly bright, artistic, musical, soccer playing four year old be able to do the things she loves. The hospital stays and countless drugs she's been on have made it hard for her to just be a child and enjoy life. We'd love nothing more than to see her be able to do the things she loves and go to school next year.
Thank You!
Blessings,
Amos and Emily Mbong
