This is our friend Mariela Escobedo. She's an amazing Mother, Wife, Friend, Nursing assistant, Team Mom, community servant... you name it, she wears a lot of hats!
Mariela was diagnosed with Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) February of 2020. CRPS is a form of chronic pain that usually affects an arm or a leg. Besides the limbs it can also spread to other parts of the body including the organs. CRPS typically develops after an injury, a surgery, a stroke or a heart attack. The pain is out of proportion to the severity of the initial injury. It's caused by damage or malfunction of the nervous system. There are treatments that might help but there's no cure for this disease. In Mariela's case she developed CRPS following a tragic accident she suffered back in September of 2019. An accident that resulted in multiple fractures in both of her lower legs- she has been wheelchair bound ever since. Even though she continues to suffer through the physical and emotional pain and the loss of her mobility and all the barriers that come along with it, she continues to move forward with wheelchair and all! She has 5 children to care for and the inability to walk doesn't stop her.
This go fund me campaign is to help Mariela and her family pay for the expenses associated with her upcoming 5 week long physical rehabilitation program which will start January 2021. Particularly room and board and wheelchair accessible transportation to and from the multiple medical facilities in Santa Monica, CA. Anything helps and is very much appreciated. Mariela is eager to get better and is very much looking forward to rehab but the expenses for lodging and transportation is a huge barrier and is weighing heavily on her and her family. We're calling on our community to come together and help lift that burden for our friend.
If you've ever met Mariela you know she has a very passionate heart. Everything she does, she does it with love. If you've ever had her as a Team Mom through one of your child's sports teams I'm sure you've seen how much she loves to spoil the kids and make them feel special through her over the top treats and snack bags. I've asked her, "Mariela, why do you put yourself through all that hard work?? That's a lot!" Her response is always with a giggle: "It's for the kids. They're only little for a short period of time and I want to reward them for their hard work and dedication to the team".
Now it's our turn to help support Mariela through her journey of rehabilitation and show her how much she's appreciated. It takes a village and it is without doubt she would do the absolute same for us. Mariela's dedication to our community and the impact she's had on our lives and our children's lives over the years does not go unseen. Any amount you are able to donate is very much appreciated and will get her that much closer to her rehabilitation she has long awaited for.
