When our beloved Mariel was first diagnosed with a rare, aggressive stage IV cancer in May of 2022, she immediately became more concerned about how it would affect her kids, her husband, and her family; rather than how it would affect her. Throughout our entire life, we’ve always seen her as an incredibly strong, courageous, kind, selfless, and loving person. That’s the type of person she is.

After more than five months of fighting, her body was not responding to the initial treatment. As a result, we later learned that she had an even rarer cancer, Leiomyosarcoma. In addition to the constant pain Mariel fights through daily, she started her chemo journey in March.

She has worked in banking her entire life and has been a full-time baseball mom to her boys. However, because of the harsh toll this disease has taken on her body, she can no longer do the simple things we all take for granted each day. 

The reality is this: our Mariel has cancer. Yet, we see her smile every day, talk about hope for the future, and push forward. She’s strong, far stronger than we realized, far stronger than any of us could ever hope to become. She’s a fighter.
