Marie Powers Battle With Cancer

Dear Friends and Family,

Hello, I’m Christina Parker, daughter to Gene & Marie Powers. This account came about at the request of those close to the family who wanted to donate and show their support for my parents. As many of you know Marie has been battling cancer off and on since 2017. There have been many ups and downs along the way but we continue to try and stay positive through this whole process. Just to include a little background to the situation that’s affected our family these past few years.

In July 2017, Marie was diagnosed with Stage 3 bladder cancer. To combat the cancer, the doctors recommended she began chemotherapy which lasted four months. Then in March of 2018, the doctors decided to fully remove her bladder and reconstruct what remained. During this removal they also removed 32 limp nodes that surrounded her bladder, one of which was cancerous. At this time, the doctors were confident they were able to remove all of the cancer, so they signed her off as being cancer free.

Fast forward 18 months to September of 2019, we find out that the cancer came back with a vengeance; this time in her spine and defined as stage 4 metastatic cancer with an estimated life expectancy of 1.5 – 5 years. The doctors immediately started her on radiation treatment for 10 straight days and thereafter, they started a new cancer treatment called Immunotherapy. Currently the doctors can only help to make her remaining time as comfortable as possible through medications and pain management. Although the doctors feel the cancer has not spread to other vertebrae in her spine, the pain she is enduring grows with each passing day and can be paralyzing at times. This cancer unfortunately, is incurable, and debilitating.

To make matters worse due to the pain she’s been experiencing, the current medication they have her on has expelled her ability to drive. With the many doctor appointments throughout the week, Gene has exhausted all his vacation time which is now creating a hardship as each day of work he misses is ten hours of pay lost. He’s been very fortunate for the many work colleagues who have been donating their own vacation time to help throughout these times, please understand what this means to us, thank you so very much.

On behalf of the whole Powers’ family, we truly appreciate everyone’s support here. To anyone else who happens to stumble upon this, your support via prayers are welcomed whole heartedly.

Sincerely,

Christina Parker
