For those of you who may not know, last Christmas, my mom, Maribeth, was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. Of course this was devastating news not only to her family but to everyone who knows her. She had been struggling throughout the fall with headaches and dizziness but thought it was allergies. It progressively worsened until Dom took her to the ER on December 27th.
Maribeth had emergency brain surgery at Brigham and Women's hospital three days after Christmas to have a tumor the size of a lime removed.
Naturally, she was eating toast the next morning and wondering how many doctors and nurses noticed her holiday mani pedi during her hospital stay...
Eight months later, here we are. As I write this we all just spent the weekend in Cape Cod with Greg's family, the first time we have all been together since what I refer to as "the accident." Always the optimists, we view this past winter as a minor hiccup. Maribeth's biggest complaint is that her corn hole game isn't quite as strong as it's been in years past. She never lets on that she has battled grade 4 glioblastoma, the most aggressive and fast growing kind of brain cancer that exists.
She has insisted since December 28th that she has her band of angels with her, and she has never wavered in her fervent belief that this is all going to be fine.
Mom and Dom are slowly getting back on their feet. By slowly, I mean Maribeth is back to work, driving, mowing her lawn in 90-degree heat up a huge hill. She'll soon be laying mulch before the color fades too much.
With world renowned chemo and radiation treatment at Dana Farber, we are so thankful that her last two brain scans have been completely clear.
Inevitably, the bills are adding up, and they're still coming in.
Maribeth is fiercely independent and won't let anyone buy so much as a sandwich for her. She has been a caretaker her whole life--her kids, husband, grandkids, friends, cats, neighbors...she also cares for animals for a living.
Having dedicated her whole life to others, my mom doesn't know how to ask for help. As her family, we are asking for her. Anything you can give makes a tremendous difference in easing this financial burden, and no donation is too small.
Thank you so much!
