Hello, this is my mom Maria. She is a 52-year-old single mother who was diagnosed with poorly differentiated stage 3 squamous cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) in July of 2024. She originally had treatment for the disease from August to October involving chemotherapy and radiation. However, it seemed that while the treatment was effective, it wasn't to the degree the doctors expected. So in December, while discussing the next step of action (surgery), they also decided to do some more biopsies on the tumor to see if it was a squamous cell carcinoma due to the weaker response to the chemoradiation treatment given and the fact it was a poorly differentiated tumor, which made it difficult to tell where it started from. The primary tumor is located in her perineum, and because it is fungating (penetrated through the skin), it has made it impossible to sit down without pain. Hence, the hope was that chemoradiation would shrink the tumor enough so that she would be able to have surgery to remove it without needing a permanent colostomy. At the end of December, she scheduled a surgery to see if the surgeon could remove the tumor without a colostomy. Unfortunately, the cancer was too connected with the anal sphincters, meaning that a colostomy would likely be needed or that another treatment would need to be given in order to reduce the tumor more to do the surgery without a colostomy. Instead, the surgeon just did a deeper biopsy to send off for testing. By January, the doctors found out what the cancer likely was. Testing revealed that the cancer had a 98% probability of being a sarcoma, and of that 98%, it had a 47% probability of being a leiomyosarcoma (muscle cancer) and a 39% probability of being an endometrial stromal sarcoma (uterine cancer). On top of that, her scans also revealed that the cancer had spread to her lungs, liver, and bones. At the end of January, she started her new chemotherapy treatments.

The reason she is starting this GoFundMe is to raise money for herself and her family as she has two kids, ages 17 (male) and 15 (female). As previously mentioned, she is a single mother and before her diagnosis, she was the sole provider for the family so her kids could focus on school but now is unable to work and hasn't since September.
