Hi, my name is María Alejandra and I’m an international student living in Sydney, Australia.

A few days ago, I suffered a serious ankle injury: a distal fibula fracture with talar displacement, which means the bones in my ankle have moved out of place and require urgent surgery with screws and metal plates, followed by a long and difficult recovery. Doctors are currently working to keep the bone aligned while the swelling goes down, so they can operate safely.

As an international student, I have private health insurance, but it only covers part of the costs. The rest (including surgery, tests, medications, and daily living expenses) falls entirely on me. To make things harder, my work contract does not cover this kind of situation, and I won’t be able to work for several weeks or even months while I recover.

What the funds will be used for:

• Surgery and hospital fees

• Medications, medical equipment, and physical therapy

• Personal expenses, food, and college fees while I am unable to work

I never imagined I’d be in a position where I had to ask for help like this, but today I’m doing it with an open heart. I’m doing my best to stay strong and positive, but I can’t face this alone.

Hola, soy María Alejandra, una estudiante internacional viviendo en Sídney, Australia.

Hace unos días, sufrí una fractura delicada en el tobillo derecho: una fractura de peroné distal con desplazamiento del astrágalo. Esto significa que los huesos se han salido de su lugar y necesito una cirugía urgente con tornillos y placas metálicas, seguida de una recuperación larga y dolorosa. En este momento, los médicos están intentando mantener el hueso alineado mientras baja la inflamación, para poder operarme de forma segura.

Como estudiante internacional, cuento con un seguro médico que solo cubre una parte de los costos. Todo lo demás —consultas, cirugía, medicinas, exámenes, fisioterapia, e incluso necesidades básicas como comida y mi colegio— recae completamente sobre mí. Además, mi contrato laboral no cubre este tipo de situaciones, y no podré trabajar durante semanas o meses mientras me recupero.

¿Cómo se usará tu ayuda?

• Cirugía, hospital y controles postoperatorios

• Medicamentos.

• Gastos personales básicos durante el tiempo que no pueda trabajar

• Apoyo para continuar con mis estudios de manera online (porque no puedo presencial) mientras me recupero.

Nunca imaginé verme en esta situación, pero hoy abro mi corazón y pido ayuda. Estoy haciendo todo lo posible por mantenerme fuerte y positiva, pero sé que no puedo con todo esto sola.
