Will you help us change Maria’s life? My son is not even two yet, but he has a love and appreciation for trash cans truly like no other. So when we were at Disneyland and all he wanted to do was follow Maria around, she allowed him to go trashcan to trashcan with her on her whole route and made him feel like the most special little boy in the world. She was my son’s Mickey Mouse and all of Disneyland’s magic all in that moment. My son is usually very shy, but she didn’t care that it took a little longer for him to warm up to her. By the end of it, she had fully trained him how to open and close the trash bag and the entire protocol on how many layers of bags there should be.

As people walked by and gave us dirty looks and said rude things, I was nervous she or my son might hear. When she looked at me and said, “It’s OK, I hear it all the time,” it broke my heart because she knows exactly what my son deals with: judgment. When it was time for her to go back where only employees can go, he watched until she disappeared. Right before she turned the corner, my heart exploded to see she turned around to get one more glimpse of my little Totty the trashman in awe of her.

She did more than make his day, she impacted him on a level no words can encompass because she saw him for exactly who he is, for exactly what he likes, and that was enough. I would love to help change her life as a reminder that she deserves magic too. As she works every single day to make sure everybody around her has a magical day at Disneyland, for one day it’s going to be hers too.

My Totty is now dressing up as her for Halloween when we will go and visit. My goal is to have raised this amount of money so that I can have it printed on a piece of paper inside his own wheelie trashcan, and we can open the lid and reveal it to her right in the middle of her shift!
