In describing Maria’s passing, one of her best friends shared these heartfelt words:

“Hug your family, check in with friends, even the happy ones, maybe especially the happy ones, they may tend to hold things in more. This world is crazy, but I wish she was still in it. She made it better. We never know what people are struggling with. Be kind. Love more.”

Maria was an amazing person and made friends so easily. She was crazy, spontaneous, caring, and joyful. She always had us laughing. Her quirky outbursts are easily remembered, and still resonate within our hearts.

Maria was so much fun and always planning the next event. She loved being outdoors, hiking, biking, swimming and boxing. She had us exploring fun events we’ve never done before like visiting the Ice Castles, meditating in a Salt cave, celebrating the Holi color festival, and creating our 2020 goals together during a Winter Solstice celebration. We even talked about doing goat yoga, but never got the chance. We all adored her free spirit and easy going ways.

Unfortunately due to the unexpected timing and circumstances of her death, many of us were not made aware of her passing until weeks later. We missed the funeral and the chance to say our goodbyes. Her family held a beautiful service in Idaho, and created a memorial site where they planted a tree in her honor.

We created this GoFundMe account to raise money to create a similar memorial site here in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Maria spend the second half of her life.

After 3 months, we have finally received permission from the city of Salt Lake to plant a memorial tree in her honor at Fitts Park, a park near her home where she spent a lot of time with her dog, Layla.

Donations will go toward the purchase and planting of the tree, landscaping under the tree, an engraved memorial bench, and a memory book which will be printed and given to her family to preserve her legacy. Any funds raised above the target amount will be donated to The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Please share this GoFundMe link to your Facebook page and invite anyone we missed to the private Facebook event where we will be planting the tree on October 10th.

Thank you!
