Dear Friends and Family:

Our mother has passed. Yet…Her indomitable Spirit lives on in her labors and even after our Mother’s eyes have closed one last time, the Gift of Life she has shared with us continues. We live on, we thrive as her legacy and she lives within, always remembered, always indomitable.

With great love and an immense sense of gratitude for your support, we thank you for joining us in sharing the great life and amazing story of our mother, Maria Montes Beltrán.

In her 72 years, mom lived a wonderful life. She was partially raised in a convent in El Salvador, studied abroad here in the U.S. as a young woman, obtained her degree in Humanities, raised a son on her own for several years, married a wonderful man, had two beautiful daughters and they worked together to change social injustices in El Salvador. Worthy of mention is the time when mom worked to get electricity to a residential division by collecting signatures for a petition and contacting service providers to restore service to a community of 40 families. All this while raising and providing for their children.

After a destructive and deadly earthquake in 1986, our parents decided to leave everything behind and make the move to California. Additional reasons for this move were the ongoing war in El Salvador, and the fact that our sister Minerva’s life expectancy was just a few years given her health. Our dad came to the U.S. first and then sent for us a few months later. A brave mom traveled from El Salvador to the USA with 3 children, Minerva, Lenny and Carlos. Carlos was separated from the group and it wasn’t until late 1989 the family was reunited again.

With a lot of work, determination and drive, our mom sought services and medical attention to give Minerva a fighting chance. While volunteering for organizations, attending doctors’ visits, working, managing a household and raising 3 children, mom helped our dad build a business to help people in the US send remittances and secondhand goods to El Salvador. While running a business, a household, being wife, nurse, cook, volunteer and more, mom fulfilled her most important role as a mother and dedicated 38 years of her life to caring for our sister Minerva.

And as if that wasn't enough, mom kept giving to the community and causes near and dear to her heart in the U.S. and El Salvador. Mom shared the story that upon giving birth to Minerva, both of them needed a large blood transfusion. It was the community, made of friends, co-workers, members of the public service and social justice groups who answered the call to donate blood.

It was in gratitude to this act of grace that mom felt such a strong calling to be of service and give back. In her last years of life, mom founded and funded an organization “Un Regalo Del Cielo” (“A Gift From Heaven”) in honor of Minerva with the purpose of providing resources and services to families of children with special needs, here in the U.S. and in El Salvador. Some of her most impactful work was realized in partnership with a Lions Club which serves the city of Aguilares in El Salvador. Mom helped to found and sustain an Inclusive Classroom for children with special needs in Aguilares, which is in its third cycle of basic education. She didn’t like to receive accolades for her work and was never awarded any recognition by any city or state officials in either country. Humble and strong, mom will always be so.

We thank you for taking the time to read about our mother and for your donation. These funds will help take care of final expenses and help our mother Maria and sister Minerva find their resting place in El Salvador. Any funds not used, will be donated in your name so that the work mom began can continue.

Creator God, we give great thanks for the gift of life you have given us through our mother and for giving us the opportunity to be witnesses to a most powerful creature You have created in all universes and dimensions: A being called Mother.

Queridos Amigos y Familia,

Nuestra madre ha fallecido. Pero aún…Su espíritu indomable vive en sus labores y después que los ojos de mamá se han cerrado por última vez, el Regalo de Vida que nos ha dado continua. Vivimos, mejoramos, somos su herencia y mamá vive en nosotros, siempre recordada, siempre indomable.

Con gran amor, sentimos una gran gratitud que usted tome el tiempo de compartir con nosotros la gran vida y la maravillosa historia de nuestra madre, Maria Montes Beltrán.

En sus 72 años de vida, mamá tuvo muchas grandes experiencias. Ella creció en parte en un convento en El Salvador, estudió en los Estados Unidos durante su juventud, obtuvo su bachillerato de Humanidades, cuido de su hijo por ella misma por varios años, se casó con un gran hombre con quien tuvieron dos bellas hijas y compartieron el mundo de servicio a la comunidad y activismo. Juntos lucharon contra la injusticia social en El Salvador. Es notable el mencionar la ocasión cuando mamá trabajó para obtener servicio eléctrico a una división residencial a través de coleccion de firmas para una petición y contactando a proveedores de servicio para restablecer servicio a una comunidad de 40 familias.

Después de un terrible y destructivo temblor en 1986, nuestros padres decidieron dejar todo y moverse a California. Razones adicionales para moverse a California fueron la continua guerra en El Salvador y que la expectativa de vida de nuestra hermana Minerva fue de un par de años debido a su salud. Nuestro padre viajó primero a Estado Unidos y luego una valiente Maria viajó desde El Salvador a los Estados Unidos con tres hijos, Minerva, Lenny y Carlos. Carlos fue separado del grupo y no fue hasta 1989 que la familia fue reunida.

Con mucho trabajo, determinación y arranque, nuestra madre busco servicios y atención médica para dar a Minerva una oportunidad de luchar y sobrevivir. Mientras trabajaba, servía de voluntaria para varias organizaciones, atendiendo a visitas médicas y cuidando a sus 3 hijos, mamá ayudó a nuestro padre a establecer un negocio de encomiendas para El Salvador. Mamá atendió su negocio, su hogar, ayudó a su esposo, fue enfermera, cocinera, fue voluntaria y más, mamá completó su más importante labor de madre y dedicó 38 años de su vida a cuidar a nuestra hermana Minerva.

Y por si fuera poco, mamá continuó dando a la comunidad y a causas cercanas a su corazón en los Estados Unidos y en El Salvador. Mamá compartió la historia que al nacer nuestra hermana Minerva, ellas dos necesitaron una transfusión de sangre y la comunidad de amigos, compañeros de trabajo y de grupos de justicia social respondieron al llamado por ayuda a donar sangre que mamá y nuestra hermana necesitaban para vivir.

En gratitud por este gran acto de solidaridad que mamá sintió la llamada a ser de servicio y dar de regreso a su país y su gente. Durante sus últimos días de vida, mamá fundó y obtuvo fondos para la organización Un Regalo del Cielo, en honor a nuestra hermana Minerva, con la misión de proveer recursos y servicios a familias con niños de necesidades especiales en El Salvador y en los Estados Unidos. Su trabajo de más impacto fue realizado en conjunto con el Club de Leones que sirve la ciudad de Aguilares en El Salvador. Mama fundó y dio mantenimiento a un salón de clases inclusivo para niños con necesidades especiales en Aguilares el cual está en su tercer ciclo de educación básica. A mamá no le gustaba recibir alabanzas por su trabajo y nunca recibió reconocimiento público. Humilde y fuerte, así serás siempre mamá.

Creador Dios, damos inmensas gracias por el regalo de vida que nos has dado a través de nuestra madre y por darnos la oportunidad de ser testigos de la más poderosa fuerza que Tú habéis creado en todos los universos y dimensiones: Un ser llamado Madre.

Les agradecemos por leer acerca de nuestra madre y por su donación. Estos fondos ayudarán a los gastos finales y ayudarán a mamá y a nuestra hermana Minerva a encontrar descanso en El Salvador. Fondos no utilizados para este fin, serán donadas en su nombre y el de mamá para que continúe la labor que ella empezó.
