Maria DaSilva's Fight with COVID

Donation protected
Update:
Maria was discharged from the Rehab Facility TODAY! She did very well at the facility under the care of the medical team and with an added bonus - her daughter, Monica Dos Santos,  as one of her therapists. Family is extremely important for support in times like these and it was proven when witnessing Maria's progress with her daughter by her side.

The family continues to need your help! Please help the family overcome the financial burden due to the medical expenses so they can focus their energy on helping her continue her recovery.

Maria DaSilva a Newark Resident was diagnosed with COVID-19 April 10th, 2020 after being admitted to a local NJ hospital. Maria was given the malaria drug as well as other medications over the course of two weeks - none of which seemed to help her condition. At this time, her daughters and family set out to find their mom an alternate treatment to save her life - convalescent plasma. Over the course of 3-4 days, the family cut through mountains of obstacles and red tape while their mother was placed on a ventilator for pneumonia - a COVID complication. On April 22nd, with the help of special friends at ABC News, Maria finally received the much needed plasma that would ultimately help her body fight the virus.

The journey was long and hard; however, Maria overcame all odds. After undergoing yet another procedure for a tracheostomy and feeding tube, she showed additional improvement and was able to be transferred to a Long Term Acute Center on June 16th. She continued her valiant fight against not only the virus but to breathe without a ventilator. To everyone’s delight, she was removed from the ventilator on June 26 - 10 days after being transferred and over 2 months after first being placed. Today, she is working very hard in a rehab facility to regain her strength and finally to go home to hug her family after 4 long months.

As can be imagined, even before Maria has set foot inside her home, hospital and other medical bills have started to pile in. While her current insurance is covering some, the additional costs are quickly becoming a burden on the family. Maria is expected to be discharged soon - still on oxygen, but home nonetheless. Please help her and the family any way possible to help the transition home be a smoother one.
