Ten years ago, I never imagined I would have stretched myself so far out of my comfort zone... and that I would do it again and again. My breast cancer diagnosis has changed me in countless ways.
On a physician's recommendation, I tried a new sport I'd never heard of - dragon boating. I've been on plenty of sports teams, but never where I didn't know a single soul. Once I got in the boat and met this amazing group of breast cancer survivors, I was hooked! At the suggestion of my coach, I looked into the possibility of trying out for the National Team. Talk about out of my comfort zone!! After the butterflies in my stomach settled, I decided to go for it. I jumped off that cliff and applied.
With a good word from my coach, I was off to Vancouver, BC for a mini camp with the Team USA Coach. After very intense training, I got the invitation to attend training camp in Florida, along with 50 other women, selected from a pool of 120. Despite not initially being chosen, I recently was contacted by the Coach and offered a spot on Team USA, going to Kunming, China in October 2017!
Thankfully, with the support of my amazing husband, son, and teammates, I've been able to devote a grueling amount of time to training. My days consist of a 5:00 AM start with rowing, weightlifting, cardio, dragon boating and outrigger canoeing 6 days a week ranging from 2 to 4+ hours per day.
This journey is not only grueling physically, but financially as well. Therefore, in addition to increasing my training efforts, I will also be spending any miniscule free time I have on fundraising projects like cookie and cheesecake bake sales, and numerous other initiatives. Stay tuned for news on upcoming events.
Those of you who know me, know the thing I hate most is asking for help. But my dedication to training, fundraising and my own finances can only take me so far. Here's where I need your help. I'm asking that you consider contributing whatever amount you can afford, without placing a burden on your own budget, to help defray the cost of airfare to upcoming mandatory pre competition camps in Philadelphia and Vancouver, as well as airfare, lodging and required competition uniforms for the World Championship in China.
Any amount donated to this page and your consideration to support me in my upcoming fundraising efforts will be greatly appreciated!
