Margie's Wao Trip - The Other End of the Spear!

Thank you for visiting my gofundme page. My name is Margie Berry Fogal.  I was born in 1958 and I turn 58 this year.  So that's cool! :)  My parents were Christian missionaries with an organization called Mission Aviation Fellowship.  My father was a small plane pilot and my mother was an evangelist.

This gofundme page is all about a longing inside me to enter more deeply into my parents' history.  And to become more connected to something that happened two years before I was born.  I was raised with the legend of a certain spear, one that killed a man.  Nate Saint was a friend of my father.  Like my father, he became a missionary pilot after World War II.  Nate was stationed in Ecuador when he set out with four other men on January 8, 1956, in his small airplane to befriend the Waodani people.  The Waodani lived at that time in complete isolation from the rest of the world.  Nate and his four companions where killed by men holding spears that day before they could complete their mission. Through a series of unlikely coincidences,  a spear from that incident ended up in my possession. It now hangs on the wall in my husband Brad's office.  A few years ago, I had the privilege of meeting Nate's son Steve for the first time.  When I told Steve about the spear and how it had been passed down to me indirectly from my father,  I said I thought he should be the one to have it.  His response was that I still needed it, but that I would know when the right time came for me to part with it.

This  week, March 10-19,  Steve Saint's organization ITEC is sponsoring a "Wao Vision Trip" to Ecuador.  A multi-generational group from the U.S. has been invited by the Waodani people to travel to their jungle home and share time with them.  To live as they do now and learn more about their history.  I find a burning desire within me to be part of this group!

The money raised from my gofundme page will be used for my travel from Los Angeles to Quito and back (about $1,000) and to cover the cost of the "Wao Vision" experience" ($1500).  When I return, I wish to share my experience with others who then might be motivated to take their own "Vision Trip."  Whatever that means in their own lives. I also hope that I can lean into whether the right time has come for me to pass the spear on to Steve Saint.

I am deeply grateful for any help you can give in turning this trip from a dream into a reality for me.  Any money raised over my goal will be used to be a blessing to the next generation Waodoni people who are now caring for the older generation.

Thank you again for visiting my page, reading my story and blessing me with your love and friendship!

With love & a grateful heart--Margie
