My best friend's mom (Margarita - who lives in Quito, Ecuador) had to undergo a surgery to manage  excess water that was accumulating in her kidneys. The surgery and care while in the U.S. was evaluated to cost US$70,000. She and her family were able to gather the money to make sure she could get back to a healthy life. However, the surgery went awry damaging her liver and heart. What was supposed to be a 3-day procedure and recovery turned into 3 weeks in the ICU and 1 other week in hospital care. She is still not out of the woods, but is very slowly getting better. The costs of these additional expenses are unbearable for the family.
