August 26th started off like any other school day for Margarita Perez-Gonzalez. Her 5th grade school year had just begun and Margarita was more excited than ever to be back to school with all of her friends. Margarita is a bright, creative, and caring student that shares her kindness with everyone she meets. She has a passion for drawing and would often gift her works of art to family, friends and teachers. It was a Thursday afternoon when she was returning from her lunch recess that things would take a turn for the worst. Margarita experienced the first of many seizures to follow right beside her classroom desk. After seizing on the classroom floor, she finally regained some consciousness as the fire department and other staff members arrived to assist her. Not having a history of seizures, her situation left her family frightened and concerned which prompted them to seek immediate help.

Unfortunately, the seizures continued in the ER and Margarita was airlifted to Valley Children’s that same Thursday night. Since her arrival she has had a team of specialists trying to figure out the cause of her seizures to no avail. She went from being a completely normal and healthy child on Wednesday to bedridden and in and out of consciousness by Friday. The only thing the doctors have been able to confirm is that the seizing is due to Encephalitis. Her body is attacking her brain and they are unable to figure out why or how to stop it from continuing to happen. Doctors have tried to treat her with various medications and procedures including filtering her blood and chemo. At this time Margarita’s body isn’t even able to breathe properly on her own. She is no longer able to recognize or talk to her family members. She has been in intensive care for almost a complete month. Doctor’s have started to talk about her possible recovery in terms of months at this point.

Due to COVID restrictions at Valley Children's, Margarita's parents have had to quit their jobs. They can’t bear to leave her side to have to quarantine to return to her room. They are her main around the clock caretakers never leaving her side. Even her older brother has had to adjust to having his family torn away from him due to the medical emergency. While they do have some health coverage it doesn’t cover all the expenses for Margarita’s care or their continued living expenses. The family has started to have to withdraw money from their retirement. We ask that you please consider donating to the family to ease their pain by helping their financial worries. Su año escolar de quinto grado acababa de comenzar y Margarita estaba más emocionada que nunca de regresar a la escuela con todos sus amigos. Margarita es una estudiante brillante, creativa y afectuosa que comparte su amabilidad con todos los que conoce. Le apasiona el dibujo y, a menudo, regalaba sus obras de arte a familiares, amigos y profesores. Era un jueves por la tarde cuando regresaba de su recreo para el almuerzo que las cosas empeorarían. Margarita experimentó la primera de muchas convulsiones justo al lado del escritorio de su salón de clases. Después de agarrarse al suelo del aula, finalmente recuperó algo de conciencia cuando el departamento de bomberos y otros miembros del personal llegaron para ayudarla. Al no tener antecedentes de convulsiones, su situación dejó a su familia asustada y preocupada, lo que los llevó a buscar ayuda inmediata.

Desafortunadamente, las convulsiones continuaron en la sala de emergencias y Margarita fue trasladada en avión a Valley Children el mismo jueves por la noche. Desde su llegada, ha tenido un equipo de especialistas tratando de averiguar la causa de sus convulsiones en vano. Pasó de ser una niña completamente normal y sana el miércoles a estar postrada en cama y entrar y salir de la conciencia el viernes. Lo único que los médicos han podido confirmar es que el ataque se debe a encefalitis. Su cuerpo está atacando su cerebro y no pueden averiguar por qué o cómo evitar que continúe sucediendo. Los médicos han intentado tratarla con varios medicamentos y procedimientos, incluido el filtrado de sangre y la quimioterapia. En este momento, el cuerpo de Margarita ni siquiera puede respirar adecuadamente por sí solo. Ya no puede reconocer ni hablar con los miembros de su familia. Ha estado en cuidados intensivos durante casi un mes completo. Los médicos han comenzado a hablar sobre su posible recuperación en términos de meses en este momento.

Debido a las restricciones de COVID en Valley Children's, los padres de Margarita han tenido que renunciar a sus trabajos. No pueden soportar dejar su lado para tener que ponerse en cuarentena para regresar a su habitación. Son sus principales cuidadores las 24 horas del día y nunca se apartan de ella. Incluso su hermano mayor ha tenido que adaptarse a que le arrebaten a su familia debido a la emergencia médica. Si bien tienen algo de cobertura médica, no cubre todos los gastos del cuidado de Margarita o sus gastos de vida continuos. La familia ha comenzado a tener que retirar dinero de su jubilación. Le pedimos que considere donar a la familia para aliviar su dolor al ayudarles con sus preocupaciones financieras.
