I've been selected to participate in a CalTech course, Product Design for the Developing World. As part of this project, I'd be traveling this December with a group of engineers and industrial designers to Kerala, India and working with the community there to develop more efficient systems and methods for improving their local industries, which things like include rubber tapping, spice harvesting, and cane furniture manufacturing. The course has operated successfully in India and rural Guatemala in the past, and has received much praise.
I'm honored to have been chosen for this opportunity, but my restrictive grad school budget does not offer much "extracurricular flexibility." My goal is to raise the approximately $3500 needed to participate - for travel and lodging primarily. I strongly believe that the payoff will ultimately be greater than the investment, and deeply appreciate any support in reaching this goal!
