Margaret L. Choy passed on June 8th, 2018 surrounded by loving family in Encinitas, CA. Marge is survived by her three children: Bill Choy, Lani Frost, and Jennie Williams; and six grandchildren: Brittany, Amber, Daniel, Sean, William, and Jacob.
In lieu of flowers, her family has chosen to create the Margaret Choy Memorial Scholarship in her memory to minimize the financial burden for students at Solano Community College in Fairfield, CA, where she was an English as a second language (ESL) instructor for over twenty years.
Marge always had a passion for education and helping international students. After moving to northern California from Hawaii, Marge transitioned from a Physical Education teacher to an English as a second language (ESL) instructor. She began working at Solano Community College in the eighties and quickly fell in love with her job. She became known to her coworkers as relentless and a driving force of compassion, both in and out of the classroom, by opening her home to students when they needed a place to stay or tutoring them from her home. Despite various obstacles that her students faced, Marge poured her heart and soul into their success and never took “no” for an answer.
Even years after retiring from teaching, Marge often spoke of her time at Solano and the students she watched grow and succeed well after graduation. With the Margaret Choy Memorial Scholarship fund, her family hopes to keep the love and compassion Marge had for education thriving for years to come.
