Margaret and Eli Need Your Support: A Call for Solidarity
Donation protected
Margaret Portillo and her young son, Eli, are facing one of life's most challenging battles—and they need your help. Margaret has been diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer, and her prognosis is grave. She will soon begin aggressive chemotherapy treatment at the BC Cancer Centre in Victoria, British Columbia, and the road ahead is daunting. This devoted single mother, who has spent her life giving to others, now needs support.
A life dedicated to social justice and helping others
Margaret is a remarkable woman—a community activist, friend, neighbour, and mentor dedicated to advocating for peace, social justice, and those in need. Her career has been spent supporting seniors struggling with housing insecurity, mental illness, and addictions. But now, as she fights her health battle, Margaret has had to step away from her job. This means she is facing financial uncertainty, with expenses piling up for rent, food, and the uncovered medical costs that come with cancer treatment.
A mum’s love and legacy
Margaret's most significant worry is for her son, Eli. A talented, young trans man, Eli has been raised with love, resilience, and strength by his mother. As Margaret's health declines, she is most concerned with ensuring Eli is cared for and supported as they begin navigating adulthood on their own. The funds raised here will help Margaret focus on her healing and give Eli a foundation to thrive as they step into this new chapter of their life.
How you can help
Whether donating or sharing this campaign, your support can make a real difference. Here's how Margaret will use your contribution:
- Immediate Needs: Living expenses, including rent, food, and necessary medical costs not covered by MSP or insurance.
- Eli’s Future: Providing a safety net for Eli as they adjust to life without their mother’s daily guidance and support.
We can lighten the load
Margaret is courageous and determined, but she can't do this alone. Together, we can lighten her load and show her that her community is behind her.
Every gift matters
No amount is too small to make an impact. Your donation will help Margaret and Eli and send a message of love and solidarity during this challenging time.
