Hi everyone,
In 2026, I plan to embark on an exciting journey, starting in Sydney and concluding in New Orleans. Along the way, I’ll explore the vibrant Deep South of the United States, capturing the diverse lifestyles of Americans for a documentary that delves into the fascinating cultural contrasts across the country.
Having specialised in American literature and written a number of essays on ‘The Illusion of the American Dream’ which you can now read on Poppy’s website, Scribbled. I’m eager to gain insight into what Americans have to say, not just those from New York and California, but also from Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana. In the wake of such a controversial election, where a figure as polarising as Donald Trump was chosen to lead a nation often regarded as one of the most socially progressive in the world, the dynamics and implications are particularly intriguing.
The main drawback of being in America is that I have to be 21 to rent a car, meaning I’ll be heavily dependent on trains to get from A to B. For accommodation, transportation, and general expenses, I’ve calculated the total to come to around £10,000. However, I’m planning to work at the retreat hotel from September to January this year where I hope I’ll make anything between £7,000 to £9,000.
I’m really fired up at the prospect of this experience but I understand that I will need to raise a large sum of money to be able to follow through with it. Therefore, ANY financial support at all will be HUGELY appreciated.
Thank you so much!
