Marcus needs our strength
On Sunday, April 18th our community experienced adisgraceful hate crime, that hit too close to ours hearts. Marcus Kelly, TravisBarber, and their families had been fishing at Lake Shasta, when a manapproached them, and called Marcus the n-word. The attacker then took out a gunand pointed at Marcus’ family. When Marcus tried to protect them, the attackershot Marcus in the back, while his 6-year-old daughter was next to him. Travisrushed to help his friend and wrestled the attacker while they both fell downan embarkment. During the struggle, Travis was shot multiple times. Theattacker then shot Travis in the back of the head and discarded his gun beforewalking away. Fortunately, two brave souls came to help and held the culprituntil the police arrived.
Travis is still hospitalized, Marcus is now at home andbeginning to walk, but they both have a long road to recovery. The physical, mental, emotional, and financial trauma that these families are facing isbeyond comprehension. But we can all do our part to help them.
Marcus and Travis are true heroes who fought for theirlives, against a violator of Universal Human Rights. Our community is made upof kind, loving individuals who come together to do what is right and willsimply not tolerate this cowardly act. Do you see a little bit of Travis andMarcus in you and a little bit of you in them? Will you stand with us in lovingsupport, respect, and solidarity for Marcus, Travis, and their families?
