Hola, soy Maria Padilla y soy la mama de Marcos, "Marquitos". Quiero compartir un poco de la historia de Marquitos, y todo lo que el ha luchado por tener una vida saludable.
Su historia comienza el día en que nació, el 22 de marzo de 2013. Cuando la mayoría de la gente supondría que era un bebé sano, le diagnosticaron el síndrome de Wescot Aldrich un día después de su nacimiento. Aunque entristecidos por el diagnóstico, ¡estábamos listos para luchar contra esto de frente! Pero nadie podía predecir los imprevistos que vendrían y descarrilaron su salud hasta el punto de casi perderlo.
A la edad de un año, Marquitos desarrolló una infección bacteriana en el estómago que le provocó diarrea severa y deshidratación. 3 días después, se sometió a un trasplante de médula ósea para ayudarlo con su síndrome de Wescot Aldrich.
Pero algo hizo que se volviera séptico y que la mayoría de sus órganos principales se cerraran.
Estuvo plano durante unos segundos.
Para tratar de ayudarlo y salvar su vida, lo colocaron en una máquina llamada ECMO que ayudó a mantener su corazón latiendo.
Tuvo que ser intubado y sometido a diálisis las 24 horas del día durante 3 meses.
Esto le provocó daños en el corazón, los riñones y los pulmones.
Al segundo día, los médicos descubrieron que había sufrido un derrame cerebral. Se tomó la decisión de sacarlo de la máquina ECMO, sin saber si su corazón era lo suficientemente fuerte para bombear por sí solo. Pero era un riesgo que todos teníamos que correr para evitar que ocurrieran los accidentes cerebrovasculares. Gracias a Dios, su corazón era lo suficientemente fuerte y seguía latiendo por sí solo, pero pronto se descubrió que no funcionaba al 100%.
Esto llevó al equipo médico a ir al corazón y hacer una abertura dentro de la pared de la cámara divisoria del corazón para permitir que fluya la sangre adecuada, haciendo que el corazón bombee más fuerte… por ahora. El plan era que este agujero se curaría solo a medida que crecía.
Pero no lo ha hecho.
Por otro lado, también nos dijeron que nos preparáramos para los daños permanentes causados por el derrame cerebral. Nos dijeron que nunca podría mover su lado izquierdo, y mucho menos caminar, o ser un niño normal sano.
¡Permaneció en la UCI durante un mes, cuando comenzó a abrir lentamente los ojos! ¡A medida que pasaban todos los días, comenzó a despertarse más y a mostrar más signos de VIDA! ¡Sabía que él estaba allí y no estaba listo para renunciar a esta pelea!
Al tercer mes, fue dado de alta. Todavía tenía la sonda de gastrostomía colocada y permanecerá colocada hasta que cumpla los 6 años de edad.
Todos nos preguntamos si la médula ósea alguna vez fue un éxito para todos los tratamientos de diálisis y ECMO que recibió, existía un alto riesgo de que pudiera haber destruido el trasplante.
100 días después de que se hizo el trasplante, los médicos hicieron pruebas para ver si fue un éxito, ¡y por la gracia de Dios lo fue! ¡El trasplante había sobrevivido a todos los tratamientos de diálisis y ECMO que se realizaron durante los 3 meses de estadía en la UCI!
Poco después, Marquitos comenzó a recibir fisioterapia para ayudarlo a volver a aprender todo lo que el derrame cerebral le había quitado. Tuvo que aprender a caminar, comer, beber, sentarse y gatear nuevamente.
Continuó recibiendo terapia para ayudar a quitarse la sonda de gastrostomía, pero ese proceso tardó varios años en conquistar.
No obstante, Marquitos sigue luchando y luchando cuesta arriba. Debido a todos los tratamientos y medicamentos que ha tenido que tomar, lamentablemente le ha causado daños permanentes en sus dientes permanentes.
A su vez, tener que someterse a una cirugía para reparar sus dientes.
Donde en unos pocos meses también tendría que someterse a una cirugía a corazón abierto para reparar el agujero que se hizo cuando tenía 1 año de edad. Todos esperábamos que se cerrara por sí solo y no lo ha hecho. No se puede dejar abierto ya que a medida que crezca le ocasionaría más problemas.

Hi, I'm Maria Padilla and I'm Marcos's mother, "Marquitos." I want to share a little of the story of Marquitos, and all that he has struggled to have a healthy life.
His story begins the day he was born, March 22, 2013. Where most people would assume he was a healthy baby, he was diagnosed with Wescot Aldrich Syndrome a day after his birth. Although saddened by the diagnosis, we were ready to battle this head on! But nobody could predict the unforeseen circumstances to come and derail his health to the point of almost losing him.
At one year of age Marquitos developed a bacterial infection in his stomach, causing him to have severe diarrhea and dehydration. 3 days later he went under a Bone Marrow Transplant to help with his Wescot Aldrich Syndrome.
But something caused him to go septic and caused most of his mayor organs to shut down.
He flatlined for a few seconds.
To try to help and save his life he was placed on a machine called ECMO that helped keep his heart beating.
He had to be intubated and was placed on dialysis for 24hrs a day for 3 months.
This caused him to have damages to his heart, kidneys, and lungs.
By the second day, Doctors discovered that he had suffered a stroke. A decision was made to take him off the ECMO machine, unsure if his heart was strong enough to pump on its own. But it was a risk we all had to make to stop the strokes from happening. Thank God his heart was strong enough and continued beating on its own, but it was soon discovered that it wasn’t functioning at 100%.
This lead the medical team to go into the heart and make an opening inside the dividing chamber wall of the heart to allow adequate blood flow to flow thru, making the heart pump stronger,… for now. The plan was, that this hole would heal itself as he grew.
But it has not.
On the other side, we were also told to prepare for permanent damages caused from the stroke. We were told that he would never be able to move his left side, let alone be able to walk, or be a healthy normal child.
He remained in the ICU for a month, when he started to slowly open his eyes! As each and every day passed, he started to wake up more and show more signs of LIFE! I knew he was in there and was not ready to give up this fight!
By the 3rd month, he was discharged. He still had his g-tube in and will remain in until he turned 6 years of age.
We all wondered if the bone marrow was ever a success for all the dialysis and ECMO treatments he received, there was a high risk that it could have destroyed the transplant.
100 days after the transplant was done, doctors tested to see if it was a success, and by the grace of God it was!! The transplant had survived all the dialysis and ECMO treatments that were done during the 3 month stay in the ICU!
Soon after, Marquitos started to have Physical Therapy to help relearn everything the stroke had taken away from him. He had to learn how to walk, eat, drink, sit, and crawl again.
He continued to have therapy to help remove his g-tube, but that process took several years to conquer.
Non the less, Marquitos continues to fight and uphill battle. Because of all the treatments and medications he has had to take, it has unfortunately caused him to have permanent damage to his adult teeth.
In turn, having to have surgery to repair his teeth.
Where in a few short months he would also have to have open heart surgery to repair the hole that was made when he was 1yr old. We were all hoping it would close on its own and it has not. It can not be left open for as he grows it would cause him to have more problems.
