In February 2021, Maddie was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. She faced it with the strength and grace we have all come to associate with Maddie. After a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation, the Gramke family looked forward to traveling and family time in 2022.
That all changed in early June. Maddie started experiencing severe headaches and nausea. After additional testing, Zach and Maddie learned on June 13 that a tumor caused meningitis on the meninges. They were told this is different from how brain cancer would present and that it is Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer.
Since then, Maddie’s oncologist has presented her case to the leading breast cancer doctors at Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University in St. Louis. They are teaming up to give her the best treatment plan and are acting quickly. Zach and Maddie are open to exploring all avenues, including trials. They are making connections and learning more about their options, including an upcoming appointment at Siteman.
The outreach has been incredible. Your thoughtful comments and well wishes on the Caring Bridge site mean the world to Zach and Maddie and keep their spirits high. So many have asked for ways to support them as they navigate these new challenges, and those needs are constantly evolving.
For those of you that don’t know, Zach resigned from his teaching job last month to support Maddie and spend more time with Maddie, Emersyn (12) and Blair (9). With Maddie facing an extended medical leave, the best way to support the family at this point is financial.
Thank you all for supporting Maddie’s road ahead. For updates on Maddie’s treatment, please visit her Caring Bridge site.
