Marcel's Journey Toward Healing

On November 14th, Marcel sustained a serious spinal cord injury after a fall that significantly altered the course of his and Rita’s lives. Currently, he has lost mobility from the waist down, in addition to several other lasting side effects stemming from that injury. Following over two weeks in the Trauma ICU at Rhode Island Hospital, Marcel was able to transfer to Spaulding Rehab Center in Boston, a leading care provider for spinal cord injury rehabilitation. Marcel’s recovery is progressing slowly, as is expected with an injury of this nature, and Marcel and Rita are so grateful for all of the encouragement, prayers and kindness they have received to date.

As they approach the end of his stay in January, Marcel and Rita must prepare their home, vehicle and lives to support Marcel in his current state of recovery and abilities. While we remain hopeful for a more complete rehabilitation in the future, adjustments must be made in the present to improve the quality of his home life and support his further progress. These modifications and additions to their living space will not only grant accessibility to the essential aspects of his daily life, but will put Marcel in the best position possible to continue his recovery.

Unfortunately, insurance does not cover the cost of several necessary items, including multiple chairs, a bathroom expansion, vehicle accommodations and necessary medical equipment. This GoFundMe is an opportunity for the many folks who have expressed interest in supporting the family and contributing to Marcel’s well-being to assist in helping him get the care he needs.

Throughout this journey, Marcel has maintained his signature sense of humor and his faith. He and Rita are choosing to focus on a bright future together, and are weathering this unexpected event with as much grace as they can. Marcel is preparing for what comes next, including his newest role as a grandfather, and is working hard to get back to the things he values most: helping and teaching others, sharing his faith, and supporting his family.
