Marc Brazeau health needs

Marc Brazeau, a key driver of science communication in agriculture, could really do with our help. In his own words:

"I was born on January 10, 1967 with a bum aortic valve. That's finally caught up with me. On July 13th I'm going to have open heart surgery and get a new, working heart valve. I can't wait to get my health back. That's what's up with me. Thanks to everyone for your support."

We know that for Marc this is an extremely challenging time financially. We have started this fundraiser to help support him, as best we can, as a sci-comm community that owes a great deal to his writing and commitment to skeptical inquiry.

It’s a tough time for many, but if you can, please make a contribution to help him through this extremely difficult situation. We know he really needs it and needs us.

About Marc and his contribution to sci-comm

A hugely admirable trait of Marc is his commitment to the concept of genuine dialogue and reflection on agriculture. This is seen through his role in the GMO Skepti-forum (a school for study and learning on the topic and skeptical enquiry more broadly), writing for the Genetic Literacy Project, and the Food and Farm Discussion Lab and its offshoots, where he as facilitated input from diverse voices in farming and science.

These platforms, and websites, have been hugely important in advancing scientific inquiry and engagement on challenging agricultural topics, contributing to the links, discussion points and sources of evidence used by many in tackling community misconceptions about our food system.

Whether it be on topics like the toxicity of glyphosate, the land utilization of different farming methods, labor and worker rights issues, GMO fundamentals, or the nature of trade-offs in agronomy, Marc has facilitated huge learning and progress in the public discourse. Marc has helped many in advancing public knowledge and improving how we engage with misconceptions, and break down barriers around contested topics.

This commitment and his integrity has seen Marc investing in projects to seek community support for his writing and sci-comm efforts, which sadly haven’t been sufficient to help bridge the financial gap, which brings us to this current challenge. Marc is not generally one to ask for a hand of this nature - and whilst now is a difficult time for many, it would be great to be able to give back in some small way to support him in this very difficult time.

Heart surgery and support

Marc has posted about his planned operation here, in which he’s linked to his patreon and paypal platforms, built to seek support for his writing. You may choose to support there, or on this Go Fund Me platform as a goal to help him through this time.

The operation will put him out of commission for some time. His financial situation was pretty dire to start with, now compounded by the virus and this surgery. With sources of income and credit exhausted, we know this is a critical time for Marc to help stay just afloat and able to make it through, in the midst of the pandemic.

We hope that if you’ve any engagement in food and farm dialogues, shared an article from FAFDL, or learnt from Marc’s commitment to skeptical enquiry and meaningful dialogue, you’ll consider lending your support.
