THE NEED

My sister and her husband, Marc & Lynda Baxis, are in need of financial help as Marc battles leukemia and awaits a bone marrow transplant.

THE BACKGROUND

In April 2018, Marc Baxis went in for a routine dermatology exam for a persistent abrasion on his leg.  A week later, he was admitted to the Cottage Hospital Santa Barbara Hospital with a diagnosis of AML Leukemia.  After a 2 month stay in the hospital receiving chemotherapy, he was allowed to go home in spite of the fact that his white blood cell (WBC) count was much lower than the doctors had hoped.

His health rapidly deteriorated over the weekend and he was immediately admitted to the ICU and additionally diagnosed with fungal pneumonia.  Over the course of the summer, his condition did not improve and he was transferred to UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital for treatment and platelet & WBC transfusions.

The next step will be to undergo a bone marrow transplant.  He cannot have the bone marrow transplant until his lungs are clear of the pneumonia & his WBC count improves.  Marc’s wife, Lynda Baxis, has maintained their home and her business while making frequent trips to the hospital to be by Marc’s side.  His children, Rebecca Jean & August have also somehow managed to work and go to school while making regular visits to see their father.  While insurance has allowed Marc to obtain the necessary treatments, it does not cover all the additional expenditures they have incurred as well as the loss of his income.  Marc has remained in the hospital since the first of May.

Many friends and family have made trips to CA to visit as well as to donate WBC and it has truly been an answer to prayer as Marc is gaining strength and continuing to fight the infection & disease.  Unfortunately, insurance only covers his current treatment and will not cover the bone marrow transplant or 6 week stay in the hospital following the transplant after he is stable enough to undergo the procedure.

The bone marrow transplant will be administered at UCLA and Marc will be required to stay at the hospital for 4-6 weeks following the transplant for monitoring and close observation.  Once he is stable enough to be released he will be required to stay in LA no more than 30 minutes from the hospital for an additional 4-6 weeks.  During this time he will be attending 4 doctor visits weekly to monitor his progress.  Marc & Lynda live in Santa Barbara which is about 3 hours from UCLA so a commute is not possible.  He will have to stay in a hotel or rent a house with 24/7 home health care during this 6 week period and commute, all of which is also not covered by insurance.  As Lynda is providing the sole income for the family at this time, the financial burden is becoming tremendous.

This page has been set up by friends and family of the Baxis family because many of you have expressed a desire to help who have otherwise been unable to travel and/or donate WBCs.  The funds collected through this platform will help facilitate Marc’s bone marrow transplant and to ease the financial burden of his continued medical care.

The Baxis family would like to thank everyone for their continued love and support during Marc’s recovery.
