Marathon of Hope 2021
"I want to set an example that will never be forgotten" It has been 40 years since Terry Fox made this proclamation in mid April of 1980 early after setting off on his cross-Canada marathon of hope to raise money for cancer research. He wanted to try the impossible to prove it could be done, unfortunately Terry had to stop outside of Thunder Bay Ontario after 143 days of running 42km a day when his cancer appeared in his lungs.
I am taking the torch from Terry.
After recently raising $1500 in the month of November for Mens Mental Health by virtually climbing Mount Everest, I found myself wondering what to do next, because if you are not trying to make someone else's life better or make a difference then what are you doing? After some thought I realized that in times of wanting to stop or times of pain through my Everest endeavor it was the painting of Terry Fox at the gym I would look to in order to find the strength to keep pushing forward.
It was so simple, he kept me going when I thought I couldn't and so now I will keep going for him. I made a choice right then to dedicate my time to doing 10km a day, in a mix of running and walking for the next 301 days until I finished the 3012km remaining from Thunder Bay to the Coast of BC that Terry had left.
The hope is to finish these kilometers off at the CIBC run for the Cure in Thunder Bay Ontario in October of this year, bringing together Cancer Research and the very city that Terry had to stop in as my final destination for the Marathon of Hope 2021.
I have currently completed 320km and have been doing so at my home gym in Barrie, Ontario (Athletic Kulture) and recently outside doing 10km every day outside until I can track down a working treadmill.
Terry's goal was to raise $1 for every Canadian in an effort to raise money for Cancer Research, I am setting my goal at $250,000. A quarter of a million dollars may seem like quite some but I am confident that people will be behind me in my goal to finish the Marathon of Hope. My hometown of Barrie has an estimated population of around 150,000 so it would be less than $2 per person just in my home city.
Funds will be delivered directly to the Terry Fox Foundation from this webpage and I will be giving updates daily on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/jr.ifbb.pro.in.progress/ ) of what I am doing and as to where I am virtually.
Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit Terry Fox Foundation, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
