My name is Nikola and I’m running the Shakespeare marathon in Stratford Upon Avon on the 26th April to raise money for three amazing local organisations that mean so much to our family .
High Flyers in Wombourne, Side by Side Theatre company in Stourbridge, and Open Stage in Stourbridge.
These charities support , young people, and adults with learning disabilities , helping them to build confidence, independence, friendship, and a real sense of belonging.
They are especially important to my son, Leo, who is a funny, kind, creative young man with a huge passion for acting and performing. Drama has given Leo purpose and confidence, and he has even had the wonderful opportunity to work as an extra on the TV series Doc Martin, where he formed a genuine friendship with Martin Clunes. Being welcomed, encouraged, and treated as an equal on set meant the world to him and showed what he can achieve when people believe in him.
But what makes the biggest difference to Leo’s everyday life are the three groups I am running this marathon for.
For Leo, they are not just activities , they are his community, his friendships, and his safe place to be himself.
High Flyers in Wombourne (and as Leo and the group always like to joke it’s not a day centre) provides a warm and supportive environment where members grow in independence, confidence, and life skills. Leo is part of a brilliant group there called Gadgets, where he helps to edit and act in videos, make props, promote projects, and support fundraising. Being trusted with creativity and responsibility gives him pride, purpose, and a strong sense of belonging.
Side by Side Theatre Company in Stourbridge gives Leo the chance to take part in drama, music, and dance, helping him express himself in different ways. Through performance, movement, rhythm, and teamwork, he has grown in self-belief and communication and made genuine friendships with people who celebrate him for who he is.
Open Stage in Stourbridge supports older teens and adults with additional needs through theatre, music, and creative arts. It helps Leo continue developing independence and social skills while enjoying the excitement and joy of performing as part of an uplifting, inclusive group.
These organisations do far more than run sessions , they change lives. They reduce isolation, build confidence, create opportunities, and give people with learning disabilities dignity, friendship, and a valued place in the community. For families like ours, they are truly a lifeline.
That’s why I’m running this marathon , to help ensure High Flyers, Side by Side, and Open Stage can continue their incredible work, supporting Leo and so many others to thrive, belong, and achieve things they never thought possible.
All donations from this fundraiser will be divided equally between the three groups
Thank you so much for any support you can give. Every donation makes a real difference, if you’re not able to donate, simply sharing this page would mean just as much to us ❤️
