Marathon de Sables (6 marathons in 5 days)
Donation protected
Hi everybody, I’m back this time, not on a bike (just for now) but attempting to run the Marathon de sables (6 marathons in 5 days, approx 265km across the Sahara desert, unsupported) from Sun 23rd to 30th April.
Here is what the organisers say -
“Branded the toughest foot race on the planet, the terrain is harsh – it will shift your perspective. The heat is intense – it will demand your respect. You will carry your pack (all your food, medical, clothing and sleeping equipment), bed down in communal tents in the sand, sleeping in a makeshift bivouac village. You will share stories, support, laughter and make life-long friends”.
I’ve plenty of experience over the years, completing ultra events, we’ve cycled almost 10,000 charity kms over 7 ultra cycling events while raising close to €275,000 on the way, all on a bike. I’ve ran lots of 5km, 10km, half marathons and 9 full marathons over the years but nothing in recent times. At the start of Covid I started to run again regularly. Along with a good friend of mine, Peter Hynes, who carved trails through local woods and forests tracks, we were joined by Alan Dunne (twice weekly) and together, we have run circa 3,500 kms over the last 3 years, through these woods, bog roads, dirt paths and forest trails, all right outside our front doors !!
My love for trail running and the great outdoor has grown since Covid and so too has my physical & mental fitness, something that has surprised me.
The Marathon de Sables has been on my bucket list for many years and I now feel fitter (both mentally & physically) than ever, so the time has come to “just do it”
This event is self financed so 100% of all money raised will go directly to our chosen cause. Our theme this year is "self care, promoting physical fitness and mental wellbeing" and whilst doing so, we are using the opportunity to primarily, raise awareness and some funds for this worthy Mayo charity;
*Mindspace Mayo (free & confidential support for young people going through a tough time).
Please help us by sharing this page with your family, work colleagues and friends. The more people that know about this challenge, the more we can promote “Mindspace Mayo” and the great work it does. Thank you in advance for reading this far and sharing my story.
