Mara Walker medical support fund

My name is David League, and I am asking for donations for my friend Mara Walker. Over the past five years, Mara has experienced several physical challenges – 2 knee replacements, the insertion of an electronic spinal cord stimulator to help manage pain from severe scoliosis, a bad fall that shattered her jaw and required three reconstructive jaw surgeries, and now she has discovered that one of her knee joint replacements is badly infected, as is the bone surrounding it. Mara will require two complicated surgeries 3 or 4 months apart to remove the infected joint and surrounding bone. After the first surgery, she will be very limited in her ability to walk and will require a walker to get around inside her apartment. After months of antibiotics via IV therapy, Mara will undergo part 2 of the surgery and will have a larger artificial knee joint inserted, along with possible bone from an outside source. The second surgery will also require 3-4 months of recuperative time with restricted mobility and lots of physical therapy.

Mara is 63 and lives in Asheville, North Carolina, along with a roommate who is also a senior. Due to these two surgeries' complexity, Mara has been advised to seek medical treatment from a specialty surgical group in Charlotte, North Carolina, several hours away from where she lives. Mara has no family or support structure in North Carolina and will need to hire someone to help her during these 8-9 months of surgeries and recovery since she will be mostly confined to bed.

Mara is a woman who gives unceasingly to others. She is warm, kind, and generous and gives without question. She is a Career Coach who guides individuals in finding rewarding jobs. True to her nature, Mara never charges clients by the hours they need to be successful – she is generous in her time and charges lower rates to ensure people have the support they need to succeed. Mara herself now needs help to navigate this tremendous challenge, as her condition will limit her ability to bring in the funds she needs to manage what she is about to encounter. Her first surgery is scheduled for mid-May.
