Hello!
We are the board members of Making Adventures Possible for All Students (MAPAS). This organization is entering its second official year, and we stand to address the financial, educational, and social boundaries that prevent students of marginalized communities from engaging in outdoor activities. Activities that entail the likes of camping, hiking, kayaking, climbing, surfing, etc. We believe it's important for ALL students to enjoy and learn from the outdoors, in a way that encourages self-reliance, curiosity, and an ethos of conservation/sustainability. We hope that by nurturing love and passion for the outdoors, our participants will translate their experiences to become more engaged stewards of our environment while enjoying the bounties nature can provide.
Our organization is in the process of obtaining larger, long-term funds for our enterprise, though we are still in need of raising capital and material donations. Your donations will allow us to continue providing students with the opportunity to participate in engaging trips and workshops we’ve been planning. These include backpacking trips to Big Sur, the Channel Islands, moonlit kayaking tours, and workshops such as gardening 101, and demystifying backpacking- these are just the start!
The funds we receive will be allocated for a year’s worth of MAPAS adventures:
$1500 for Purchase/renting of outdoor gear. Partnering up with UCSB’s Adventure Program we are lucky to reduce the costs of gear like water filters, first aid kits, cooking materials. MAPAS would like to
$1500 for Food costs: Food is expensive in California, but this is averages to $500/quarter in food for our participants.
$750 for Transportation costs. For many students, this represents one of the largest barriers to taking part in outdoor activities. These funds will go towards car/van rentals, gas, etc.
$750 for Campsite fees: Costs required to reserve spots in California’s bountiful outdoor state parks.
$300 for Miscellaneous costs: Repair to MAPAS gear.
$200 for MAPAS merchandise: stickers, patches, and shirts for promotion
