Local, independent restaurants are the backbone of our community, and for over 35 years Manuel's has been serving great Regional Mexican food in Austin, TX. We directly employ 80 people and support many local Texas suppliers up and down the food chain. Manuel's also has a long history of donating generously to dozens of charities, schools, the arts, and non-profits every year. Now, we are the ones who need help. On March 17th, our Downtown and Jollyville Road locations closed when Austin restaurants were mandated to close dining rooms due to COVID-19.
Per the Mayor's mandate Manuel's Great Hills was closed for 7 weeks - and Manuel's Downtown is still closed. The business model of a restaurant is dependent on today's cash flow to pay yesterdays bills. Invoices from 45 days ago are paid with money earned today. Owners funded the last three payrolls with no revenue coming in, and donated over $30k in fresh food to the staff and community after we shut down. Servers and bartenders earn the majority of their income in tips, and some are not eligible to receive unemployment. We have been working every day to stay on top of potential loans and relief programs while facing this pandemic. Yet in spite of what you may have seen on TV - little aid has come through for Independent restaurants and the service industry workers who help run them. Federal & city government programs are bogged down in red tape and bureaucracy, while banks, insurance companies, and SBA loan programs keep changing procedures and criteria. Many hours spent calling and filling out forms yielded a PPP loan. Most of those funds have been spent on employees as this situation drags on much longer than any of us thought it would.
WHAT IS NEEDED
With business levels half of what they were - our employees will need help paying for food on the table, rent, electricity, childcare, and medicine as we continue the process of trying to get Manuels Great Hills profitable again, and re-open Manuel's DT. Some have worked at Manuel's for many years and are the good people who greet you with a smile, remember your name & favorite cocktail, listen to your problems, cook and serve your meals, and make everyday life better. If you’ve ever created great memories with friends + family in one of our restaurants, this would be a great time to express your support and gratitude.
