Manuel Diaz Revoredo Will Conquer Guillain Barre!

Manny began to feel weakness and tingling in his hands and legs after Kidney stone surgery in April of this year.  Over the next few days, this father, grandfather and husband to my good friend Mirka quickly lost the ability to walk and move independently.  This once strong and healthy man quickly deteriorated to the horror and  frustration of his loved ones.  

Mirka had him admitted to emergency, and after 5 days of tests they were able to diagnose him with a rare condition called Guillain Barre Syndrome.  Manny and Mirka learned that his is a severe case that requires emergency treatment and months if not years of rehabilitation.  

(In Guillain Barre Syndrome,  the immune system begins to to attack the lining of the nerves.  Doctors and researchers don't know for sure what causes it,  but it is often preceded by a viral or bacterial infection.) ninds.nih.gov
Manny has undergone two of the recommended treatments for GBS. He got High Dose Immunoglobulin 5 times, then returned to ER a week later for 5 treatments of Plasmapheresis.  No other treatment is available for him right now.  He must rely on physical therapy and time.

He is now in a rehab facility receiving physical therapy.  There is no way to predict how he will progress, but so far recovery has been very slow.

Manny and Mirka are grateful for insurance and family and friends that have generously helped out during this trying time.  The past few months have been physically and financially stressful on both of them.   Manny has been unable to work for several months, and Mirka has tried to work whenever she can when she is not caring for Manny.  They are now at a point where they are not able to pay bills for basic living expenses.
