"Manong" Mark Serrano: Memorial and Family Support
Donation protected
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of beloved “Manong” Mark Serrano, who left us far too soon on April 4, 2025. A loving partner, devoted father, and loyal friend, Mark was a force in our community whose impact will be felt across space and time.
Whether through his volunteer work, advocacy, or vibrant presence, Mark touched countless lives. Mark’s journey in activism began at SFSU, where he studied Asian American Studies and first found his passion for community organizing through the Asian Student Union and League of Filipino Students. Over the past 20 years, he was a founding member of FACTsj, a core member of FANHS-Santa Clara Valley, and executive director of the Filipino Youth Coalition. Beyond this, Mark was also a gifted tattoo artist, beloved DJ, and served as Vice President of San Jose Zulu Nation.
He brought art, music, culture and empowerment together in all he did. From years of hosting Battle of the Tribes to provide positive and creative outlets for high school aged Filipino youth, to building bridges between Akbayan SJSU and San José cultural organizing; from his work co-organizing for a Pinoytown mural and walking tours, as well as FACTsj’s signature festivals, Jeepney Jam and FAHM Jam, Mark’s legacy reverberates.
We will always remember his laughter, warmth and welcoming spirit.
In the wake of this unimaginable loss, we are reaching out to our extended community — the many lives “Manong” Mark touched — to ask for support in two important ways:
1. Funeral and Burial Expenses: $30,000
We want to give Mark the beautiful, heartfelt farewell he deserves. Your contributions will help cover funeral and memorial arrangements so we can gather together to celebrate and honor Mark’s incredible life.
2. Ongoing Support for His Family: $20,000
Mark leaves behind his wife Leslie and their toddler son Francis, who are now facing the difficult road ahead as a single-income household. In addition to grieving this tremendous loss, they are now burdened with the financial challenges of maintaining stability and security for their family and extended clan. Your support will help lighten this burden by covering remaining medical bills and essential needs like childcare, education, and everyday living expenses.
No amount is too small, and every gift is a step toward healing. If you’re unable to contribute financially, sharing this campaign with others who knew and loved Mark is deeply appreciated.
May we come together in love, remembrance, and community to support “Manong” Mark, Leslie, and Francis-- just as they have supported the community as a family all this time.
