Manuel Reyes ALS Fight

Hello, my name is Manuel Reyes. I was born in 1978 in Mexico City. I’m the middle child of a family of three and just like many other families we emmigrated to the United States in the late 90’s looking for a better life and opportunities to provide for our family. I had just turned 18 when we arrived and soon found myself working at a fast food restaurant where I began to learn English through the interaction there. I realized quickly that to succeed I had to improve my English skills and get back to school. I got my GED from Forsyth Tech two years later. I started to save money and went to college. I graduated from UNCG in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, completing one of my lifelong goals of being a college graduate! During my time at UNCG I was the president of the Hispanic-Latino student organization. I also helped kids from high school after class to promote college life among them and participated in many events with the Hispanic league of the Piedmont Triad.

Life was great and the future was bright. I had a good job and I was active in the community. Then my health started to decrease and eventually I wasn’t able to work. I was diagnosed with ALS Disease at Baptist Hospital by their neurology department in April of 2016. As I learned much about ALS (Also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) I was in shock and thrown in to a battle with this disease. ALS currently has no cure as of right now, but there are treatments available to help prolongue the inevitable. Undergoing any of these treatements can be and has been very expensive. Over time I will be in need of other assistance as this progresses. It is my hope that through this gofundme page that we will be able to raise enough to ease the burden of finances on my family as we go through this process.
