MANGO 2020

The MANGO Campaign is Language Exchange Atlanta's campaign to promote a broader type of education than the STEM model of learning.  It covers areas such as language learning, media literacy, service-learning, law, and college planning.  A donation to MANGO will be useful for providing more resources for schools, media coverage for the movement, and fund important administrative expenses.

Multiculturalism is a big priority of the MANGO model of education. It includes educating others about different languages, international holidays, global tourism, international food, and customs that are common around the world. Likewise, this involves encouraging educators to promote more cultural diversity in areas such as racial and gender equality, and fighting against discrimination based on religion, political beliefs, and disabilities. Communities with more diversity are more likely to thrive than ones that don't.

Art is a very important part of helping students become more creative, but sadly it is being cut from many school budgets. We strive to bring back the arts, whether that means painting, theatre, music, and other components. Media literacy is the largest part of our focus on art. The media, consisting of TV, social media, the radio, and other forms, is also an important part of the arts. We believe it is crucial to help improve media literacy so students can become better researchers through more critical thinking and less bias.

Nature is very valuable, as the sky, land, and water are important for all living creatures. Climate change is a very big topic and our schools can be important for helping us reduce our carbon footprint. Reusing, reducing, and recycling more often can be very useful for making this planet more sustainable. Furthermore, raising awareness of animal welfare by educating others about abuse in zoos, aquariums, circuses, and rodeos can be discussed in schools. Other ways we can be more environmentally conscious include abstaining from littering and saying no to cigarettes, as well as other drugs.

Grammar, as well, is an integral part of the education experience. Learning proper punctuation and spelling is a necessary part of both the speaking and writing experiences in schools. Grammar is necessary for all subjects in school and in every language. Language learning is infused in the grammar piece of MANGO, as it is not just about the multicultural aspect. We also place a lot of importance in ensuring that students know how to read properly, as fighting illiteracy is an important aspect of understanding grammar. Listening skills, as well, are necessary parts of understanding grammar.

Opportunity in the MANGO model emphasizes mostly on career planning in education. However, it also includes opportunities to get involved on campus, particularly in the area of service-learning. Educating students on the best ways to help others creates opportunities for both the people doing the service and particulary individuals that are receiving the services. College planning is another high priority area of providing opportunities, and this may range from helping students select majors to doing well on exams and writing admissions essays.
