Aloha! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Mandy Sumner and I live in Hawai'i, I'm a professional Geologist as well as a competitive Freediver.
I left my geological career in Sep 2015 to travel to Cyprus to compete at the Individual Depth World Championships which are held every 2 years. It was the best decision I could have made, as I ended up earning the FIRST GOLD MEDAL (man or woman) in U.S. history at World Championships. My dive was 58 meter NO FINS (190 ft) and I'm very proud and humble to be United States FIRST World Champion Freediver.

I started freediving in March 2014 and my first freediving competition was in May of 2014 in Roatan, Honduras. After another competition in Kona, Hawaii in June, I was accepted as one of the top three females in the U.S. to be part of the US Freediving Team. In Sept 2014 I competed at Team World Championships in Italy and had a blast with my teammates as we all had great performances. That was the first time I did a Go Fund Me account to help with paying for competition fees, travel, wetsuits, and lodging. Freediving is an amazing sport but unfortunately it's out of pocket for most U.S. divers.
Since Team Worlds in 2014, I really got the competitive bug and started training and competing more in 2015. Last year I went to 8 competitions, UK, Honduras, Hawai'i, Cyprus, Greece, Egypt, Mexico and Australia, in 8 months. That was a little ambitious and because of that I have taken some time off this year but am now ready to start competing again!
I will be heading to the Nirvana Oceanquest Freediving Competition in San Andres, Colombia, May 27th, 2016. I would like to raise enough money to help me pay for travel, lodging and my competition fee. This competition will lead to the scores I need to be considered for the 2016 U.S. Freediving Team which will be held this September in Greece. (Team Worlds is also held every two years).
I would be very grateful to anything you could donate to keep me on my competitive journey. I feel I have so much more to give to this sport and I look forward to sharing that with you! Now I have the time to commit fully to training and concentrating on going deeper, getting stronger and putting all the skills I have learned over the past 2 years into action.
I am proud to represent the United States and I thank everyone in advance for their support! Please share my story and my fundraising efforts. Mahalo!
Anyone who donates over $75 will recieve a USA Freediving t-shirt and sticker from my Freediving company, Apnea Hawaii Freediving where I teach freediving courses as well as train and coach freedivers. Mahalo!
If you would like to learn more about my freediving journey, here is a great article on Deeper Blue.
